Meet Jason M Gutierrez of Chandler, AZ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason M Gutierrez.

Hi Jason M, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got started in graphic design while searching for a new educational path. I had just graduated with my associate degree and was looking to continue on to a bachelor’s. I found two programs at ASU that fit the bill; one was the Graphic Arts program in Tempe, and the other was the Graphic Information Technology (GIT) program in East Mesa. I chose GIT because it was closer. That turned out to be one of the most fortuitous decisions I’ve ever made.
After graduating, I worked several graphic design jobs. The most informative was a series of roles in commercial real estate, where I designed marketing collateral for brokers and their listings. It was solid work, and I had the chance to really hone my skills. Before long, I was freelancing on the side in addition to my main job.
During that time, I completed my master’s degree in technology from ASU. I was then able to leverage both my experience and education into increasingly complex roles, sometimes because I was recruited, sometimes to meet a business need. I was also invited to teach in the GIT program, which gave me the opportunity to help shape future colleagues and contribute to the industry.
These jobs paid the bills and helped me expand my skill set, but something was missing. Too often, I felt like a cog in a machine, someone there to generate revenue, not drive real change. That feeling lingered until August 2023, when my wonderful partner finally put words to what I’d been thinking: “You can do this for yourself.” I spent the next three months getting my ducks in a row, and in late October 2023, JMG Creative Solutions was born.
I spread the word to friends, family, and social media. Before long, I landed my first client…and then another. Since then, my client list has steadily grown. I’m doing work that matters and making a visible difference. From the beginning, I’ve been focused on helping small businesses, nonprofits, and individuals who don’t have access to a marketing department. In this focus, I’ve found purpose, real-world results, and meaningful personal connections.
Almost two years in, I’m still learning and making progress—and I expect that will never stop. Looking ahead, I see continued success, deeper impact, and JMG Creative Solutions growing into a firm that truly makes a difference for its clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say it has been a smooth road, but not an overly bumpy one either. The hardest part has been learning the business of business. My experiences have more than prepared me for the work that I do for clients. However, finding clients, bookkeeping, legal and compliance issues, taxes, and other matters have been the real speedbumps on the road to success. I am learning, though, my partner helps where she can and is my biggest supporter. As I progress, I learn from the new challenges and ways to overcome them.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My design philosophy is one of enhancing comprehension through thoughtful use of design. I am a visual learner and found that the inclusion of graphics, images, or layout can help someone comprehend a complex topic by making the concept easier to consume. This philosophy underlays everything I do for clients.
But, that is not easy to market as a service people are willing to pay for. That is where the services I provide come in. While the list is not by any means inclusive, I have a list of services that can benefit my target audience of small businesses, nonprofits, and individuals. Some of these services include print design, posters, flyers, postcards, brochures, reports, infographics, print and digital ads, newspaper/newsletters, catalogs, personal branding, apparel, web design, web banners, visual identity, stationary, business cards, email design, commercial photography, real estate photography, professional headshots, and instructional design.
What sets JMG Creative Solutions apart is the level of expertise and experience with a multitude of concepts, technologies, and business needs. I often work as a one-person design department for my clients by completing several projects simultaneously.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have found that finding a mentor is much easier than networking. I am an introvert by nature, so networking doesn’t come naturally to me. That being said, my advice for both is don’t be afraid to approach the situation. If you are looking for a mentor, start by looking inside your knowledge base. A teacher, boss, or even a senior-level colleague can act as a wonderful mentor. Outside of that, reach out to someone who is doing what you want to do.
With networking, especially if you struggle like I do, my advice is to stretch your comfort zone. If you are terrified by conferences, pick a small one to attend with no expectation, just to attend. Stretch that into handing out business cards at the next conference. Keep moving in that direction until you achieve the level of comfort you desire. The key to both is action, like Nike says: “just do it.”
