Meet Jason Buck of Desert Eagle Counseling Services in Chandler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Buck.

Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Before I became a professional counselor, I was an anxiety patient. I started having anxiety when I was in middle school, and it became more complex as I reached my 20’s. I’ve spent many hours as a patient in counseling. This eventually led me to study counseling and psychology to become a professional counselor. I went on to complete a lifelong goal of attending Arizona State University where I was awarded a Doctor of Behavioral Health degree in 2012.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a good road showing up every day to try to help people. Though not always a smooth one. One of the challenges of being a professional counselor is that you can be “vicariously traumatized” by the stories of the clients. One must have a good support system in place to help keep “work at work” and have a balanced home life. Sometimes I struggle with self-doubt and confusion. Sometimes people try to take advantage of my kindness. But each time, there is a learning involved. Keeping in regular contact with close friends and faith in God helps tremendously. Volunteering and being involved in church is important to me.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have a small private practice. I see about 15 patients every week. Meetings range from 60-90 minutes. I specialize in anxiety, stress, mood disorders, trauma, grief and loss, and existential and spiritual struggles. I practice cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness, and faith-based approaches. Each person comes in with specific needs. Meeting people where they are at and using the right tools for the right problem is the constant challenge of professional counseling. The thing I’m most proud of is the excellent community of other professionals I call friends. We all help each other with tough client situations. I’m also proud to just be able to do the work. Many people in this field either burn out or eventually just do it as a job to make money. I’m thankful to still have passion for the work and still get “chicken skin” when clients get better.

What were you like growing up?
When I was younger, I was very much observant of the world and liked to joke around a lot. I was considered a “class clown”. I liked spending time with friends, playing sports, playing video games, etc. I also began having a close relationship with God around age 12-13. I was pretty involved with reading the Bible, going to church, and having meaningful conversations with people. I even liked writing letters and still do.
