Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarvisson King.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jarvisson. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started five years ago when I moved back home. I was concerned about my mom’s health and being that we are in a rural area and grocery stores are an hour away I started gardening. My first year I grew the traditional Navajo foods, corn, squash, watermelon, and cantaloupe. In my second year, I started experimenting with some of my favorite veggies, spinach, carrot, peas, green beans, radish, lettuce, kale, and other leafy greens. I realized that after my second-year people in my area are interested in fresh locally grown produce. This year, I started raising chickens for fresh eggs. The crazy thing with this journey is that I never knew that I could grow all of what I eat.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I would say that meeting the demand of a market is never as easy as it sounds especially when working with nature. Nature does not ever do what we want. The other struggle is my soil, being where I am my soil is deficient in a couple of nutrients and several micronutrients. Amending my soil is a priority for me each year and building my soil up naturally. One thing I do not ever want to do is turn to chemicals for fertilizing and controlling insects and weeds. I prefer a natural method so I have been experimenting with cover crops for the past three years.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Laughing Goat Gardens is known for naturally grown vegetables but that is not all that we offer. We also offer pasture-raised, pasture finished meat including beef, lamb, goat and in the future pork and chicken. We started offering fresh eggs this year. One thing we also offer is kneel down bread, a Navajo delicacy which is ground fresh corn and baked, similar to cornbread. I am proud that we are offering locally grown produce to our community. We are small now but we are growing and we have big plans for the future. What sets Laughing Goat Gardens apart from others is that we take into consideration our customers’ health by growing everything naturally.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Being where I am, it is a bit difficult to start. I think it is mainly because most people have livestock but not all grow vegetables. Also, it’s more of educating people about the benefits of naturally grown local produce.
