Meet Jared Robison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Robison.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My name is Jared Robison, and I am originally from the town of Butler Pennsylvania, just north of Pittsburgh on the western side of the state. As a child, I grew up in a Blue-collar setting, and it was there, where I learned a great deal about work ethic and discipline. Over the last ten years, I have been slowly entering into the White-collar profession. I attended Slippery Rock University, where I received a BFA in 2016. During my time there, I focused primarily on painting, performance, and video.

I often collaborated with dancers to create a sense of dynamism in my works, specifically in conjunction with live paintings and expressive performance. Now that I am a 3D + Extended Media graduate student at the U of A, I have continued to explore these interests as well as new, more philosophically driven projects dealing with the intersection of my Blue-collar and White-collar aesthetics/ethics.

Please tell us about your art.
My work is a direct reflection of daily observations dealing with who we “are,” what we “are,” and why we even care to know what we think we know. This type of thinking usually tends to be serious, and for many good reasons, but at the core of my existence humor, parody, and sarcasm help me critique my subject matter. So, there seems to exist tensions between myself and the questions I am asking. On the one hand, I bring with me an intensity and awareness about my subject matter and to the “Self,” while on the other I am trying my best to make it appear as flawed as possible. I have found through Video-Performance and live Performance Art, these two parallels at times can become one, and when that does happen, clarity presents Itself!

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I am fascinated by how fast things change nowadays, be it technological or whatever hot topics are trending online. At no other time in history has it been easier for an artist to get their work out into the public, but with that comes much more competition and endless imagery. Publications like yours, help keep communities engaged with one another and help smaller artists gain exposure.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Most of my work (video and performance) is meant to be experiential, and it needs that type of environment to exist. To be in the moment for longer than ten-seconds is an ever-growing obstacle that I am determined to figure out as an artist. I want and need to connect with the audience. My website is currently going through changes, so for the time being my Instagram is where my Art and personal life become one. You can find me @ jyrid__robison if you are interested, and eventually, I’ll have my website link back up there.
