Meet Janette Hernandez of Lashed and Beautiful

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janette Hernandez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My interested in beauty started at a young age. I went from giving my dolls haircuts to graduating from cosmetology school and working as a hairstylist. Besides hair, I tried being a makeup artist and a nail tech. Although I enjoyed them, I didn’t feel the “spark” or satisfaction I wanted.

I felt discouraged and made the decision to take a different route and work in the medical field. During that time, eyelash extensions began to gain popularity, and I became a regular client. I knew it was something I was interested in learning, but because my job was full-time, it was very hard for me to attend one of the available certification courses.

A few months after, I found out I was expecting my first child and was very sick throughout my whole pregnancy, so I had to quit my job with the idea of returning.

During my time off, I learned how to apply eyelash extensions and asked my friends and family to be my models. Once I started getting more practice, I realized this was something I felt passionate about. I didn’t want to do this as a hobby. I wanted to dedicate myself and be the best I could possibly be.

Since then, it’s been four years, and after multiple certifications and long work hours, my passion, love, and appreciation for my job as a Lash Artist is greater than ever. Being an entrepreneur definitely has its struggles, but the satisfaction you receive is extremely rewarding and doesn’t compare.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of my struggles has been learning how to allow myself to be authentic. Sometimes the fear of what others will say can restrain us from showing what we are capable of doing. I’ve learned to not compare myself to others and accept that we all have something unique to offer.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lashed and Beautiful, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a licensed Cosmetologist and multi-certified Lash Artist. I offer eyelash enhancements such and lash lifts and lash tints but specialize in the luxurious service of eyelash extensions. My goal is not only to help my clients feel beautiful in the moment but to also be a positive influence in their confidence levels and self-esteem.

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for businesses like yours?
The lash industry here in Tucson is definitely growing. I strongly believe that everyone has something to offer and although we are all each other’s competition, we are also a great community, and we are willing to help one another.
