Meet Jane Spicer of Daphne’s Headcovers in Northwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Spicer.

Jane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was just a ten-year-old kid who wanted a sailboat. I’m as surprised as anyone else to find myself the CEO of an international company. It’s all because of my mum, Daphne, our company’s namesake. Together, we were working on making and selling puppets, when a “silly idea” got us into the business of animal golf headcovers. We were off and running. I loved it. Along the way, I earned the money for the sailboat. I have to say, the excitement of building our company alongside my partner and mentor, my mum, forced the sailboat to the back of my mind for a while. Now, it’s been 40 years, and I’ve been running Daphne’s for more than two-thirds of that time. She taught me well.

Arizona
As a true Arizona native, I love sunsets and saguaros. One of our newest headcovers is a Roadrunner, another native of the Southwest. Daphne’s is a home-grown Arizona company, although we are now represented in 75 countries. Our Phoenix headquarters contains a warehouse and manufacturing base, so I get to be involved, “hands-on,” with some of our production.

We started with animal headcovers. Our Best Sellers include The Golden Retriever, The Gopher, and of course, The Tiger. Tiger Woods’ mother gave him that headcover, and it put Daphne’s on the map. The “Just For Fun” headcovers came later, like The Pirate and The Ninja. We are always moving forward, looking ahead and creating new designs.

I have always felt that with success comes responsibility. Along the way, I seem to have become something of a role model for young entrepreneurs, especially women. It is a great pleasure for me to serve as a mentor and help them succeed in whatever their passion may be.

Life-work balance

I stumbled a bit, actually a lot, when my mum passed away suddenly. All the responsibility was suddenly on my shoulders. Somehow the company survived and even thrived, and so did my children. Let’s just say I learned a few things about life-work balance. I truly enjoy hiking our wonderful trails in Arizona. Family time is precious with my two children and our various rescue animals.

One of the things I love about Daphne’s is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. How can you, surround by the silly Gopher, the crazy Monkey Made of Sockies, and in a box filled with new designs? Friends often ask me, “What’s in your Inbox today?” It could be an urgent request for unicorn headcovers to be delivered to the Phoenix Open or a note from a long-time customer asking us to restore a beloved yet bedraggled headcover.

So, now, you know. There is a real person behind the company. Come visit us at www.daphnesheadcovers.com.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
From starting to earn a sailboat at ten years old to inventing animals headcovers and earning the car at 16, I heard a lot of “no’s, that is a crazy idea, those will never sell. I overcame this by placing a laser focus on my goal of earning a car.

I just learned “on the job,” from the mistakes I made along the way and the challenges I encountered. There were plenty of both. Being a 16-year-old girl selling a new product that had never been seen made me be able to proudly say that I have been kicked out of the finest golf courses in all of Arizona.

I learned on the job by listening to customers and always, always focusing on my goal. If I didn’t sell anything, I didn’t see it as a failure just an opportunity to get more sales the next day. But I knew we had a quality product and a niche in the golf business that no one else occupied. My Mum used the phrases “just do it” long before my favorite shoe company did and another was “go on, GO ON” after any rough day I encountered. We believed totally in what we were doing, and still, do, and work tirelessly to be the best that we can be.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Daphne’s Headcovers – what should we know?
Daphne’s Headcovers is the only headcover company in the world that offers a lifetime guarantee on our headcovers. We believe in exceptional quality and service and my passion is that you will hear when you call and talk to any member of our amazing team and you will feel it when you touch our headcovers.

Our core value is: “we must do good while doing well” so we take great pride in working with charities around the world and support missions that align with our hopes for a better planet.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was full of energy, very friendly and always into something. I grew up sailing, hiking, skiing, playing tennis, reading and traveling so my curiosity was constantly being both fed and expanded. I loved to draw and spend time with animals and outside still soothing my soul and spawns creativity.
