Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Singer.
Jamie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is about finding a way to always use art. There were three things I always knew I wanted to be when I grew up. A singer, a teacher, and an artist. I started painting as often as I could, singing in as many bands and choirs as possible, and then I graduated from Eastern Washington University and became a teacher. It was always a challenge for me to continue doing art for myself and music when I was focusing so hard on becoming a teacher. Finding a balance was not easy.
I have found ways to incorporate the joy of music and art with my third graders, but I needed a way to grow myself. Another challenge was coming from a family that was mostly into sports and I was the only one who cared for art or music. I moved to Phoenix Arizona two years ago for a teaching position. What I did not realize, is how amazing art and music life is here. Since then, I have painted more, started to create my band to gig with and became a worship leader, all while teaching.
One day, I was hanging out with my friend who does web design and we came up with the idea of integrating my artwork on clothing apparel! This idea blossomed into putting my paintings on pillow cases, phone cases, swimsuits and more. So far, I have been developing my business through my website jamiesingerart.com to start graphic designing and making an online store so anyone can buy these products at any time!
My goal is to sell more products on my website and continue to do this for a living, as well as singing. It is beautiful when you see your dreams and goals coming together. I am starting to remind myself that it is possible to do not only one thing, but several things you love. I hope to see my music and art bring people joy, and that I can continue doing what makes me happy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges with finding time to do music and art. I live on my own and I have no family around here since they are in Washington State. It was a bold move coming out here by myself. Therefore, my job with teaching is what makes the most money and needs a lot of attention (as you know teaching is not just summer vacations and roses as some think).
Other obstacles have included knowing how to advertise for jamiesingerart.com since it is an online store for art and apparel, not that many people know about. This means sales are currently low. When it comes to singing and trying to start a band, there are also obstacles. Finding reliable people that want to stay in the band, finding venues, and the music equipment is expensive. I have learned to take things day by day and look back at where I started from and how much I have grown in two years. The key has also been meeting new people and learning from others.
Please tell us about your business.
My online business jamiesingerart.com is unique because I take my paintings and put them on items to buy. There are many people out there that do graphic design, but mine is different because I am taking the art that is my own and making more art out of it by finding the best clothes, or items to put it on. My singing that goes with it is also unique because I have many genres that I like to do. On YouTube, under Jamie Singer, I also have several videos so that I can start using that as a business to help play at weddings, graduations, and venues. My dream is to be able to paint and sing somewhere.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is when I would get other kids from the neighborhood and create dances, concerts, or painting classes with them. We would spend hours outside creating things and I would become so proud at the end. We would invite our parents, have shows, and even though back then they were probably not the most talented, we had so much fun creating. This was when I knew I had the love for teaching, art and singing.
