Meet Jamie Korb of Von Korb Art Studio in Warehouse District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Korb.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The stars aligned when I met Helen Hestenes at an astronomy party in 2014. Explaining to Helen that I recently moved back to Phoenix after thirty years in New York City, she said that she owns The Icehouse, and had studio space for me. ( The Icehouse was built in 1920, now, a rare complex of warehouses in the original townsite of Phoenix). Von Korb Studio is on the patio at The Icehouse.

Abstract Stained glass pieces are a favored medium. Crystal collections, vintage books, fabrics, handmade jewelry in a cozy downtown icehouse vibe. Commissions, open bý appointment and First Fridays.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Where fate shall twist, so life shall spiral.

What to do when, deep down, in the single digests you want to be an artist? With parents that discourage being an artist to do something practical, their guidance follows the rules of reason. The artist within couldn’t be repressed, and consistently grows regardless of reason.

A first art experience, at ten, carving wax and centrifugal casting with grandfather. Silversmith experience through teen years with mom.

Pastel lessons helped pave the way in creativity too. My path moved from growing up in Wisconsin, to the desert of Arizona for ten years before finding New York City. Involved in Phoenix blossoming art community of the mid-eighties, watched the city art scene start from vast industrial wasteland to what it is today! New York City area was my home for thirty years. I developed my jewelry art to stained glass ‘jewelry’ pieces. Tragedy can change life in a minute. Yes, tragedy struck, leaving out the details, back to Arizona, welcome back to an art community that’s grown immensely in such positive ways.

What were you like growing up?
Surrounded by trees, fields .of grass and corn, lakes… and rivers, childhood was a peaceful place in southern Wisconsin. Summers spent in northern Wisconsin, amidst the pines, fishing in the lakes and rivers. The peaceful atmosphere was a place that time moved slowly. Oh, to live in a big city, saturated with history!
