Meet Jamie Jarman of Jarmans Craft Coffee in Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Jarman.

Please kick things off for us – where does this story begin?
Coffee has been a big part of the Jarman family for many years. Coffee was a part of many of the group outings when my wife and I were friends working together in Texas in the late 1990s. When we started dating, we would have many dates at coffee shops. Several years ago, when our daughter, now 10, was less than a year old, we took a trip to Hawaii and toured a coffee farm. During this tour, we got to firsthand and how coffee is grown, harvesting, processed, and ultimately readied for the roaster. We also learned that it was possible to purchase green coffee, a small home roaster, and to learn to roaster quality fresh coffee.
Returning home to Arizona, we were excited to get a small roaster and begin the process! Our daughter, at less than 2 years old, became fascinated with coffee and has been drinking decaf ever since. Our house became known among friends and family as a coffee house. When visiting, you could experience fresh coffee made many different ways.

In 2013, we decided to roast coffee as Christmas presents for our friends, family, and clients. For many years, Kim Jarman was a photographer focusing on lifestyle photography of weddings and family portraits. Jamie has served for many years as a Certified Public Accountant helping businesses, their owners, and middle-class families with tax planning and consulting. The coffee gifts were a hit and over the next couple of years, we would send coffee to friends and family around the country, on a small scale.

Over the years, Jamie got into craft beer and later into whiskey. Like his love for sharing coffee, he started to have people over to experience and share craft beer and spirits. Friends, and sometimes total strangers, would gather together and taste, compare and connect over something as simple as craft drinks.

Believing that life is best experienced connected with others, Jamie loved the idea of connection and sharing these experiences with others. For him, Craft Coffee lead him into the craft beer community, and that in turn lead him to be interested in the whiskey community… and he thought it would be fun to combine all three crafts into one, which brought about Jarman’s Craft Coffee.

Jamie is a big believer in community, and when not with family or working, you’ll usually find him bonding with others over a coffee, craft beer or whiskey. Jarmans craft coffee roasts original & barrel aged coffees. It is made with love for those who love coffee. Jamie is a craft enthusiast and roast coffee for craft enthusiasts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are pretty new in the latest phase of our journey. One of the biggest struggles over the years is just giving ourselves permission to really put ourselves and our coffee out there. It can be intimidating to create a product and make it public. Another interesting aspect is that in order to create barrel aged coffee, we need barrels. We are actively seeking out breweries and distilleries to work with. To be able to use barrels coming wither directly from an AZ distillery or an AZ brewery is our focus. Building these relationships has been a fun part of the journey. We have great respect for those making craft beer and spirits.

Jarmans Craft Coffee – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in small batch, single origin original and barrel aged coffees. We are pretty new but are becoming known as a great place to get quality fresh roasted coffee. We are proud to offer both non-barrel aged coffee as well as barrel aged. Many who enjoy various spirits enjoy quality coffee. We are taking it to the next level by aging coffee inside barrels that previously held spirits. Some barrels have also been used to age craft beer from an AZ brewery after it had previously aged a specific spirit, such as whiskey or bourbon. We like creating limited release boxed sets allowing our customers the opportunity to enjoy the same coffee bean, with the same roast profile, as both an original roast (non-barrel aged) and barrel aged. It is pretty unique to be able to taste the coffee both ways.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
So far, the proudest moments have been seeing our first release sell out and watching our craft beer, craft spirits, and coffee world intersect at our Adventurous Stills release/ launch event. For the first release, customers had the option of having the coffee shipped, or to be able to pick it up at an event held at the distillery where the first barrel we used came from. When setting out on the barrel aged journey, we had a hunch but really were not sure if people would find it interesting enough to give us a shot. If they did, we were confident they would love our coffees. When I first shared the barrel aged coffee with our daughter, she loved it and said, “you are on to something.” Her belief in our coffee is a big part of us sharing it.
