Meet Jamie Hairston of Flawed by Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Hairston.

Jamie Hairston

Hi Jamie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My books are a fictionalized reflection of my own experiences, inspiring the captivating journey of the main character, Renee. In “Memoirs of a Black Sheep,” published in July 2020, readers are introduced to Renee at her lowest point as a meth addict in a mental hospital. They follow her relentless pursuit of sobriety, delving into the raw realities of addiction and witnessing her unwavering determination to overcome them.

Continuing Renee’s story, “Lost Black Sheep,” explores her ongoing adventures and the challenges she faces during her journey towards sobriety while in rehab. With an authentic tone deeply rooted in personal experiences, this sequel delves into the complexities, triumphs, and setbacks that define Renee’s path of recovery.

As for my third book, I was initially titled “Black Sheep No More,” it has been renamed “Black Sheep Run” upon the insightful suggestion of my editor. This upcoming installment follows Renee’s unyielding battle with sobriety, both within the confines of rehab and as she strives to rebuild her life after leaving. It vividly portrays her struggles, triumphs, and setbacks, capturing the essence of her journey toward healing and self-discovery. Through these novels, which draw inspiration from my own life, I aim to provide a fictionalized but deeply personal exploration of mental health, addiction, and the transformative power of resilience.

In addition to my focus on sexual assault in the military, mental health and addiction issues, and prison reform, readers should know a few important aspects of my work. Firstly, my writing aims to bring these paramount social issues to the forefront of public consciousness, urging unwavering attention and transformative action. I believe that by shedding light on the prevalence of sexual assault within the military, we can fuel advocacy for justice and provide unwavering support to survivors.

Moreover, my exploration of mental health and addiction concerns seeks to foster a profound understanding of these complex issues, dismantle stigmas, and create an environment of empathy and support for those affected. Through my writings, I challenge existing narratives and cultivate a space where individuals and communities can openly address and confront these challenges.

Additionally, my focus on prison reform reflects a deep belief in the necessity of a justice system that prioritizes healing and rehabilitation. By actively engaging with this critical issue, I strive to raise awareness, spark meaningful conversations, and inspire collective action toward reducing recidivism rates and promoting societal well-being.

Through my writing, I aspire to serve as a catalyst for change, encouraging readers to step forward, demand transformative action, and actively participate in creating a more compassionate, just, and engaged society. I aim to engage hearts and minds through eloquent prose and poignant narratives, fostering a deeper understanding and inspiring a collective commitment to effect positive change.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my most significant challenges was learning to accept life on life’s terms. At times, I resembled a stubborn toddler being escorted to the car by their father while their mother finished grocery shopping, averse to facing the realities of responsibility. In my case, turning to drugs became an escape from taking ownership of anything. However, as I journeyed towards sobriety, I discovered that this coping mechanism only exacerbated difficult situations. Sobriety demanded that I confront the uncomfortable aspects of life I had been avoiding. In my subsequent role as an addiction counselor, a profound lesson came into focus—one that didn’t entirely make sense until then. I realized that regardless of how uncomfortable a feeling may be, it is essential to experience it fully, be it pleasant, challenging, or unsightly. Ignoring or suppressing these emotions only allows them to fester and grow more detrimental over time. Embracing and working through the discomfort became a pivotal realization in my personal growth and recovery.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Flawed by Design?
Flawed by Design serves other writers by empowering and mentoring them and helping them perfect that piece for their story. Developing the writing into the finished product will demonstrate our exceptional service. Every story has a unique journey to share, and we believe that your story matters. I am currently working on assisting other authors and aspiring authors in writing and self-publishing their first books. I specialize in writing about mental health and addiction issues as an addiction counselor, and I can talk about these topics for hours. I am most proud of the fact that I stopped being overwhelmed and anxious about the process of self-publishing and finally just did it in 2020. That was a big step for me. What sets me apart from others is my ability to listen and interact with others regardless of our opinions. I can still respect that they hold different values.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned that it brought light to the fact that many people before the pandemic were guilted into working when sick instead of resting; covid changed that. It also showed the world that many folks appreciated the ability to work at home so much that they chose to do it permanently, even if they had to leave their jobs and find somewhere flexible enough for them to be able to do that.
