Today we’d like to introduce you to James Green.
Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The earliest memory I can recall of me being with a camera in hand or around cameras was traveling with my grandparents. My grandma would always have a camera with her whether we were in the house, playing in the yard, or competing on the track. Growing up my parents had us participating in 4-H. Each year I had a habit of switching up projects, so for a few years, I did photography. After reaching my sophomore year in High School, I put the camera down but picked it back up my freshmen year of College at Trine University. While pursuing my Degree for Design Engineering Technology, I was a part of the wrestling team and pledging Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. During that time I would capture everything from us training, pre/post workout fun, parties, & community service work.
After graduating I had not picked up a camera until my move to Indianapolis, IN from Muncie for work. While in Indy I was playing on a Mens Rugby League Team and got a very bad concussion. During the recovery, I came to the conclusion I needed an outlet that wasn’t so physically rough on my body as sports had been for my wife and I’s future. That has led me to where I am currently.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been far from smooth. Just as I was starting to establish myself within the Indianapolis Creative Arts Community we packed up and moved across country. This was mid pandemic so being isolated was another bump in the road. I have slowly met creatives in The Valley over the past year and a half and continue to. Another challenge I have faced is the adoption of film photography along with the use black and white in an era of instagrams bright airy trend.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in Film Photography. Most of my packages are film-based along with digital coverage. I am transitioning to being mostly a black and white photographer. In my eyes color captures what you the subject is wearing while black and white captures the soul of the subject. I am proud of the eye I have developed for turning mundane tasks into something creatively beautiful.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First big shout-out goes to my beautiful wife Dr. Raquel Green. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. When we were engaged she got me my first “newer” camera after that concussion. Secondly, I’d like to shout out Nick Wilson for having me when possible, letting me observe his process, hiring me when he needs help, and for just being a great friend and person.
