Meet Jake Skalish of Jake Skaish Illustration

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Skalish.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up I was surrounded by an artistic family, so drawing became second nature for me. As most young artists do, I would draw and try to replicate my favorite car, movie or video game character. I would try to better myself each time to make it look as close to the actual subject as I could. But I always felt like I couldn’t create something as detailed straight out of my head. That frustrated me the most. I would be able to replicate a rendering of “Master Chief” with ease, but couldn’t fathom the creativity that went behind creating the character.

What I’m trying to do as an artist now, is trying to prove 8 years old me that I can create that character. (In a nutshell).

Has it been a smooth road?
I’m a very typical artist in that my biggest struggle has always been how I create my art or my “style’ so to speak. I’ve tried to force myself many times into different styles because I aspired to be like the artists that I looked up to. I think that in doing that sometimes you figure out a little bit about what you actually do like to create.

Getting stuck doing that is where it became a big struggle for me. But I found that my style organically transformed into something that felt more natural to me when I wasn’t trying to be like other artists. And being more welcome to change in my art helped it become something that felt like it had more of me in it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jake Skaish Illustration – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a freelance illustrator that doesn’t really limit themselves to what type of commission they will take! Ranging from band logo’s, editorial illustrations, portraits, or drawings of someone’s dog. I would say that my art speaks for itself, or at least that’s why I’m striving for because I’m not very good at explaining things.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’ve never been to Pheonix, I hope to visit one day.
