Meet Jaimie Greene of Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaimie Greene

Hi Jaimie , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I never thought much about making music growing up, but I got really into writing lyrics and poetry back in my sophomore year of high school. I taught myself guitar, at first for a girl actually. I produced some beats with me playing guitar early on that same year, but never turned those into full songs. Most of my first songs were just a lot of vocals layered together on a beat I took off of youtube. After 2 years of making music I quit for a while. Unfortunately my life was changing a lot at this time. I was graduating high school, my grandpa wasn’t doing well, then passed away right around Christmas. I was moving out of the place I was staying as well so things had to get put on pause for a while.

During this hiatus I learned a lot and reevaluated many parts of my life, and who I wanted to be. My music taste also changed quite a bit. This then led to me coming back to music as ‘Morningstarr’. The name has a lot of personal meaning. The new music is influenced by acts like Dominic Fike, Jack Johnson, Mac Demarco, The Strokes, Fleetwood Mac, and others. I made a handful of demos for this new sound I had in mind, and I’m still working on a few. I was excited and anxious to show people the new music but it wasn’t ready to be released. So I decided I’ll just perform it until it’s ready, and mess around with it as I go.

The first show back was titled
‘As Above, So Below 07.06.24’.
As Above, So Below became the official name for every other show I’ve had since, and I think the name will stick. For this show I went from performing solo to forming a band, which was new to me. I wanted to make a band for a while but never thought I’d find the right people. It all came together really quick it feels like now. Since then, we’ve performed 5 times total; one in LA, and 3 in PHX, and 1 in Mesa.

We have a First Friday performance coming up December 6th at Bud’s Glass Joint, and then December 7th I set up a show in Phoenix for a local artist that goes by ‘Numbuh Xero’. Finally to end the year we are performing an acoustic set at a secret location December 28th. For more details follow us on instagram; @morningshtarr

As for music that is coming there is no dates for anything officially, I’m in the process of getting some of the resources I need to finish the songs and other media for an album. There will be singles before that, that are not from the album, and ones that are from the album. For now you can listen to our recordings from shows or come to one and experience it live!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always struggled with anxiety and depression, I dropped out in 10th grade because of it. Then after I went back Junior year, I ended up going to the mental hospital because of suicide ideation and struggles with bipolar. It was a dark time. I was very disassociated for a few months. It stemmed from my mother’s mental health break down earlier that year, that resulted in her hospitalization for bipolar. I was diagnosed as bipolar there and put on meds, but eventually stopped taking them after a few months and haven’t since. I’ve had a tremendous amount of help through therapy. Still, it’s tough somedays some weeks even, but music is what helps me get my emotions out when I can’t in a conversation.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I produce songs and write the lyrics/sing. We play live as a band with Derek on drums, Aiden on guitar, and Graham on bass with Aiden sometimes filling in. I also set up events with As Above, So Below which I founded this year. The idea is to bring groups of people from all scenes together, and have newer acts that need more recognition performing alongside established artists. I’d say I’m most known for my old music maybe, or the shows I’ve set up this year. I’m not sure about my new demos, I know some have done ok on social media and people love them at the shows, but I don’t think people can know me from any of those songs because they aren’t out anywhere. I’m definitely most proud of the community we are building with the As Above, So Below shows. Its almost therapeutic to be at one, just getting all the bad energy out in fun way is more than enough to be thankful for:

What matters most to you?
Being balanced and being a good leader matters most to me, because everything has its place and its purpose and I won’t repress that. If I have a vision to make something better it has to start with me leading by example, only then people will follow.
