Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaeana Morgan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jaeana. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Long Beach, California. All my life I have always been into fashion, whether it was helping family members to put outfits together, to going to the mall to try on clothes, even if I didn’t buy anything. My favorite dolls growing up were Bratz Dolls, because they, like me, had a “passion for fashion.”
Growing up, I wanted to join the fashion industry, but unfortunately, I could never find the perfect job for me. I never really learned how to sew so I could not become a designer, I thought about becoming a buyer, but then I realized I would never be able to keep the clothes that I bought for the store.
I wore uniforms to school up until senior year of high school. So, there was never a need for me to buy regular clothes, because I did sports on the weekends during high school, and there would never be a place for me to wear them. Slowly, my interest in fashion started to deteriorate, and I began looking for interest in a different area. I came to Phoenix, Arizona to start college, and realized “no. more. uniforms.”
I knew that it was my time to shine, and once again I began to feel whole again. I began watching YouTube videos and saw there were so many YouTubers who get to buy clothes, try them on, style them, and I realized they were living my dream life. I mean, getting paid to buy clothes, style and review them? I had found my dream job.
I’m a new YouTuber, I haven’t begun reviewing clothes on my channel, but I am making a name for myself on Instagram, where I post pictures of my outfits. I am still attending college, where I am majoring in Elementary and Special Education. After I graduate, I hope to go back to Long Beach and continue to pursue my social media career in fashion, as well as my teaching career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Becoming a fashion vlogger/Instagram “model” has not been a smooth road. Have you ever heard the saying “You have to spend money to make money”? Well, that is the truth.
Due to my busy schedule with classes, homework, and being the current president of my schools Black Student Union, which takes up majority of my time, I can’t fit a job into my crazy schedule. No job means no money to fund my dreams, and therefore, it is harder to get noticed on social media without being able to present new clothing items, and have more of a variety to showcase on my Instagram.
To get noticed by fellow fashion lovers on Instagram, one has to display clothing items and accessories that are currently available to purchase. Any lover of fashion will tell you they are always looking for new and unique items to purchase and with the majority of the items that I own being thrifted or items that are no longer being sold, it is harder to be noticed in the fashion industry of social media.
However, this process has taught me to be patient and how to become a gritty person. To have grit means to persevere no matter what obstacles come your way or how long it takes to reach your goals. I’m not saying this makes it any easier for me, but remembering my dreams and my goals helps me to keep going.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a fashion enthusiast that wants to inspire people to use fashion as a way of expression. Fashion for me is an outlet and a way for me to feel confident in my own skin. I was bullied growing up about my size, and I found that through clothes I can accent my best features, and feel more confident. Some people use makeup to boost their self-esteem, I just use clothes.
I specialize in helping people feel more confident. I want to help those who are going through the same thing of having a hard time finding clothes that accent their bodies, those people who have low self esteem because they aren’t seeing their body types being “glorified” in society to know that fashion can be their friend and that they are beautiful as they are.
I use my social media to inspire people, on my YouTube channel I currently give advice about life, from personal experiences, and I will continue to do that even after I start reviewing clothes, and stores. What I am most proud of as an upcoming influencer, is that I can reach people, and help them to gain motivation to get through the week, and inspiration to help their self-confidence.
The thing that sets me apart from others, is most fashion vloggers/Instagram “models,” don’t use their platforms to inspire people, but rather they mainly focus on fashion, and I want to inspire people through fashion, and through positivity.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in coincidences, and so I don’t believe in luck. However, I do believe that God has blessed me along the way. Blessings come in different shapes and forms.
What may be a blessing for one person, is different for another. I have been blessed through learning valuable life and business lessons. The life lesson I have learned is that following your heart can be scary, and dangerous, but if you take your brain along for the ride, you will always have a voice of reason.
The business lesson that I learned is that you shouldn’t always take the first offer that you receive because something better may come along, yet at the same time, try not to be too picky because then you can restrict yourself from progressing.
Lastly, in anything you do keep God and your morals at the center of it all. Don’t lose yourself in the process of making your dreams come true.
