Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Walker.
Jacqueline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Believe it or not, no one starts out looking “fit.” It has to be achieved and maintained. As a matter of fact, I used to be so out of shape. I hated how I looked and felt. I started my fitness journey about seven years ago. When I first started going to the gym, I had no idea what I was doing. At this time, I was in grad school and a single mother of two amazing children. I knew how important exercise and nutrition was and finally made the time to make it a solid part of my life. After a few times going to the gym with my friend who taught me how to lift weights, I absolutely fell in love with resistance training. I started going consistently, at least four times a week. I was missing something though. Cardio. My muscles were getting defined but I still wanted to lose weight. I did research on the best exercises to lose weight and how to eat properly. I introduced myself to high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, and a nutrient dense diet. I did watch my macronutrients. From then on, I became a beast! I started developing my own workout plans and meal prepping. I taught myself how to stay consistent with my strength training routines, how to build more lean muscle while losing fat, how to increase my cardiorespiratory endurance and importantly maintain my physique and health. In the midst of all this, I ended up obtaining my personal trainer certificate to have a deeper understanding of how exercising works.
What is my motivation? Looking fit, feeling my best and not getting sick since I have started this journey has influenced me to maintain this lifestyle. I have way more energy than ever before and I feel less stressed.
After hearing from my primary care physician that my wellness labs were exceptionally unheard of (blood sugars, cholesterol, thyroid, etc.) I promised my self and made commitments to keep my health and fitness goals on track throughout each change.
Throughout all the self-education, obtaining my personal trainer certificate to better understand fitness in health (as this is not really discussed in nursing or nurse practitioner school) and swapping one old habit for a newer healthier one, I realized I created my best self, well still in the process. I want to share what I learned and teach people how to get fit, healthier and maintain this lifestyle.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I think the biggest struggle is adjusting to change and keeping consistency. This could be from the kids starting summer break, keeping up with their sports and after-school activities, going on vacation, starting a new job with a change in hours, or simply going to a new restaurant and hoping they have healthy options on the menu! The way to overcome these is to prepare and use the available resources. I always remind myself that this is my lifestyle and it will all work out, I am my own limit.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a nurse practitioner working in vascular right now. It is so rewarding. I teach a group fitness class at the YMCA on Thursday’s. It is called Muscles and Movements. I absolutely love it!! However, my passion to teach people how to make fitness and nutrition a lifestyle. Not just for looks, but for overall better health and prevent or manage chronic disease. As a brand, I am most proud of how I teach fitness and nutrition. My programs focus on core and full body strength, toning and fat loss while, using an ascending pyramid approach that can be done at home or in the gym, with the hopes of building confidence for my clients to get back into the gym.
Maintenance is taught to help make it a lifestyle. We teach how to burn calories, enhance fat loss, increase overall strength, tone, and improve flexibility, mobility, coordination, balance, and agility.
There is a fitness questionnaire before selecting a specific plan. This will help with safety and keep the question of “what’s next” after a program is completed.
This ascending approach is fun as it includes a blended fitness regimen including high-intensity interval training, bodyweight cardio, pilates, yoga, strength training, and circuit training to keep it interesting.
One last thing that sets us apart is the training method and plant-based + egg white meal plan that is used. This is exactly how I train, including doing all the cardio at home. The programs all include videos of N.power fitness doing the cardio, HIIT and circuit workouts with the client from their own home!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be spending time with my family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I absolutely loved the bonding, spoiling my parents with gifts and being showered with them! I absolutely loved the positive energy and joyfulness. I remember just laying by the Christmas Tree and enjoying the peace.
