Meet Jack DeBartolo 3

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack DeBartolo 3.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an architect and principal leader of debartolo architects. A phoenix-based architectural design studio that has been focusing on making significant architecture since 1996. The studio of debartolo architects has created inspired places at universities, elementary schools, churches, restaurants, and workplaces in New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, California, and throughout Arizona.

By working closely with a variety of trusting clients, we have fine-tuned our research-based design process that begins by listening, thinking, and responding to the goals, facts, and needs of each project. This simple yet effective approach has led to numerous award-winning projects, long term relationships, and repeat clients for over two decades.

We are a highly capable, dedicated, and disciplined team of architects and designers eager to assist and serve our careful selection of clients. Our strategically controlled workload and studio size allows us to stay highly involved with the details of every project from start to completion. We focus on designing places for community, assembly, culture, and memory through the careful orchestration of material, space and light. It is with this tenacity and dedication that we approach every project.

Please tell us about your art.
Our “artwork” is architecture and we are focused on place-making. We shape places and spaces that represent our flourishing community and culture. Our buildings are responsive of culture, climate, context, function and people. Our work is rigorous and sensitive, timeless and critical, sustainable and economical. We create our work with a small and focused, highly experienced and yet youthful design studio. We are inspired to make places that elevate and celebrate the best of our culture. We focus on working and collaborating with clients and craftspeople who care about the quality of making and the beauty of craft. We team with excellent builders and technology experts in order to achieve the most with the least.

Our approach to architecture can typically be traced back through our clear philosophical position on SITE, PROPORTION, LIGHT, SPACE, STRUCTURE, MATERIAL and SOUL. These elements of architecture provide a lens by which we can discuss the qualities of our work.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Architecturally speaking – fighting against the ugly. So often architects are faced with issues, clients or challenges that do not permit them to create beauty and spaces that are memorable and appreciated. We need to work to create relevant architecture that is critical, responsive, highly functional and culturally sustainable.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
We are fortunate to have work that is built both in the private and public sectors. Throughout Phoenix and beyond, we have several built projects (churches, schools, campuses, retail building, coffee shop, car club) that are accessible to the public. These projects provide people an opportunity to see and engage the work. Some local examples of work in the Phoenix Metropolitan area:

– Dream City Church campus, Phoenix
– Fervor Creative offices, Scottsdale
– Prayer Space, Gilbert
– Barnone, Gilbert
– Redemption Arcadia, Phoenix
– Redemption Gilbert, Gilbert
– The Grove Church, Chandler
– Bicycle Haus, Scottsdale
– Power Parasol, ASU Tempe Campus
– OTTO car club, Scottsdale
– New City Church, Phoenix
