Meet J Boogie and Mar Lokey of BoogieLo in Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to J Boogie and Mar Lokey.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started rapping in high school. At the time, it was more of a hobby rather than a passion. The songs we made were just for fun and lacked content. About two years after that we began to take it more serious and investing in our music. Our music evolved into more honest and vulnerable content while still maintaining the fun energy. We were curious if to see where it would go and how far we can take it.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been far from smooth. We are both full-time students attending colleges on two different sides of the country. Also, we had to make sacrifices for the sake of making the music and having the money to create it. The hardest part about it is finding a balance between music and other priorities such as school, family, and social life.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are simply artists from creating music, creating promotional posters, t-shirts, and music videos. The thing we are most proud of is progression and being able to connect with fans. It’s exciting to see people can’t wait for the next project we drop. Through it all, we have managed to stay true to ourselves and what we believe in. When we listen to our music, we notice that we are more vulnerable than most artist. We are willing to share that we don’t have it all figured out and we question a lot as well. I think our mindset is different because we are focused primarily on the music, rather than streams, money, and publicity. We truly want to connect with the listener.

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
If we could go back, we would research more of the business aspect of our music. Initially, we overlooked a few details due to inexperience. Also looking back, we would save up a lot more money to fund our music career.
