Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Delfin-Savage.
Hi Ivy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My love for gift wrap and package design started at an unusually young age. I was about three years old when I would spend hours watching and helping my mom make the bows for my hair. By the time I was eight, I was begging to wrap my cousin’s birthday presents, and it’s been my passion project since.
Since then, I have had a great career as an in-house Media and Marketing Director specializing in cohesive branding and design. I graduated with my degree in Art from Arizona State University in 2015, but I spent my first two years of university at Parsons the New School of Design in New York City. It was when I pursuing a career in the New York fashion industry that I actually started to ruminate and hold on to the idea that I could eventually have a career in gift wrapping.
I have spent the last six years absorbing and learning as much as possible about design, marketing, and branding to get to this point. My day job is still as a freelance branding and design specialist, and I love that field of work very much. Having a good eye for design, the technical skills of a professional graphic designer and extensive marketing experience have all prepared me for my next chapter as the owner and creator of Wrap Mojo.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has certainly not been a journey without speed bumps! Like most young people, I struggled with finding myself and a fulfilling career. With that said, as cliche as it sounds, the biggest obstacle I have faced is time. Setting up the proper foundation for a new venture is very time-consuming. I have been working on Wrap Mojo for the past few months with any bit of free time I have, and while it has been a little tiring, it has been extremely rewarding. Sometimes I get a little bit impatient as I have so many plans and things in the pipeline, but taking the time to execute them correctly is crucial.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a graphic designer, I am sought out as a typeface and color specialist. I love creating full branding, logo, and website packages for companies. I believe that having a cohesive, striking, and industry-appropriate brand is vital to any business trying to succeed in the digital age.
As a gift wrapper, I am particularly well known for my bows. I am constantly striving to make the most perfect, fluffiest, and balanced bow for a gift. However, I would love to be known for more than just a great bow! I am working to add more variety to my gifting lineup and showcase my experience with corporate and event gifting. I would love to work with weddings, other businesses, and beyond!
What sets me apart from other gift wrapping services and crafters is my graphic design experience and education. I have worked with paper, printers, and cutting machines on a professional level for years and have a deep understanding and passion for color and presentation.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Never stop learning and practicing! I am constantly amazed by all the facets and elements behind every industry, practice, and craft. I think everyone has something to gain by continuing to expand their knowledge within and outside of their business, even those at the top of their careers!
If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to spend more time finessing my crafts, even if it was just watching tutorials on YouTube or doodling in my sketchbook. Nothing beats experience and practice.
