Meet Hyacinth Powell of Hyacinth’s Holistic Health in Independent Location

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hyacinth Powell.

Hyacinth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story began as a child when I discovered writing. I lost my older first cousin to gun violence when I was 12 years old. It was the first death that truly impacted my life and I wasn’t sure how to handle it. It was then I discovered writing. Initially writing was something I could only do when I was sad or upset. As I grew older I discovered that writing can be a great tool to express all of my emotions, not just hurt and pain.

At the age of thirteen, I developed my passion for serving and helping others through volunteering. I was apart of Police Explorers in Charlotte, NC where we collected a warehouse of toys and also fed over 100 families in Charlotte, NC. I continued my volunteer work as I got older with Hands-on Charlotte. I led activities with programs such as Florence Crittenton (an organization that provides housing and other resources to teenage parents).

As a young girl, I suffered from epileptic seizures, the last one being a Grand mal seizure which caused my heart to stop. Once revived and awake, I had to learn to speak and even walk again as my brain signals misfired. I learned the power of resilience even at such a young age.

At 14 I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, an intestinal disorder that led to numerous hospitalizations and blood transfusions. Many times I was unable to work or attend school, my senior year in high school being one of those times. I missed six weeks of school and had a major project due (Senior Exit- a three part research project required for graduation). Even given extra time to complete my project and being a new mom ( I became a mom in my junior year of high school), I finished my Senior Exit on time and graduated on time!

I went on to attend North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NC and later transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte studying Psychology. My health continued to be an issue and I was eventually forced to withdraw. However, my calling to help others, even during my challenges never left me.

I continued to pursue a path that would allow me to serve and help others. At age 24 I went to school to become a medical assistant on my journey to being a nurse. At the time that was my vision for helping others. I graduated even after having my daughter seven weeks prior. I was determined to continue.

In 2013, I experienced a very traumatic event leaving me riddled with despair, fear, hopelessness, and doubt. Suicide became prevalent in my mind as I never saw myself making it through. I was in counseling and still felt so alone. I’d been given all sorts of medications for depression and anxiety, now for PTSD. I felt so off-balanced, nothing like myself anymore. I felt hopeless. I decided to end a ten-year relationship with my children’s father and moved cross-country to Phoenix, in hopes of another chance.

Once in Phoenix, I felt isolated. I didn’t know anyone and many times felt alone. It made me often struggle with the idea of moving back to Georgia. After being inspired by the words of Brene Brown, “you can choose courage or you can choose comfort, but you can’t choose both.” I chose courage. That courage began my journey to self-healing. I sought knowledge like it was air, I redefined my beliefs and over three years arrived at peace. I wrote and published my story and created my business in hopes of inspiring the same in women who share my path. Being that ray of hope to let them know, there is more!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Before even creating Hyacinth’s Holistic Health, I had to overcome my own personal health and mental challenges. I was diagnosed with seizures as a child and later developed Crohn’s disease at the age of 14 years old, I became a teenage parent at only 16 years old. At 26, I was diagnosed with PTSD after being sexually assaulted. All of these major life challenges strengthened the core of who I am and I began to realize that I was being prepared to support and lead others through similar challenges, It was a very challenging road. Yet, as I healed through each challenge I began to see it was all for a greater purpose, it propelled my process to heal.

Once I began processing through my pain, I was given ideas for a book, which I published June 2019 entitled, Peace In Chaos: Journey to Self. In February of 2019, I officially established Hyacinth’s Holistic Health. What I’ve learned in my process of establishing my business is that there are always new challenges that will present themselves, However, now I see challenges as an opportunity to learn and grow and so I continue to learn and grow as a solidify my vision.

Please tell us about your organization.
Hyacinth’s Holistic Health is an organization that provides a second chance for women who have found themselves faced with trauma. Trauma is defined as any life-altering change, namely relational abuse (sexual, physical and emotional). HHH supports clients through engaging self-guided healing tools coined MAJ (meditation, affirmations, and journaling) therapy by Hyacinth. Each component of the MAJ therapy has proven beneficial individually by reducing stress, releasing endorphins that enable healing, lowering blood pressure and instances of heart disease which according to AHA (American Heart Association) kills half a million women per year. Journaling in particular also strengthens immune function and improved lung and liver functioning.

Our number one goal is to guide women in regaining their power through self-healing. Women will receive both group and individual coaching sessions weekly via call, meetup or group chat. Clients will participate in a self-paced guide to personal healing. Reestablishing power and authority by providing tools that will be accessible for a lifetime.

In addition, Hyacinth’s Holistic Health (HHH) provides women access to holistic practices such as yoga, healing crystals, and herbs. I established Hyacinth’s Holistic Health after experiencing several life-changing events personally. On my journey to healing, I found that healing can only happen if the individual is committed to the process and willing to do the hard work and go the extra mile. As someone who has experienced trauma, I’m very open about my experiences as I know that part of healing is vulnerability and people like to know that they’re not alone.

What sets me apart is the experience. It’s one thing to study a book about trauma and go out and help others, but it’s another thing to know first hand what it feels like. I learned to not see those experiences as negative but as opportunities that created the place, I’m in today. I’m extremely grateful for each experience.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality that has kept me going is resilience. I’ve faced things that many would want to give up and succumb. I’m driven by those same things. Failure for me is an opportunity to improve and push forward. I will always rise from the ashes!
