Meet Hillary Lacy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary Lacy.

Hillary, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always did photography part-time because it was something I loved and was passionate about, but I never considered doing it as a career. I graduated from ASU with a bachelors degree in economics, and once I started getting into work.

I also started getting busier with booking weddings part-time, so I decided to quit my economics career to focus on photography full time. Best. Decision. Ever. It was so scary at first, but within a few months I got my groove and have been growing since.

Has it been a smooth road?
Honestly, it’s been a really easy road for me! I think the biggest challenge as a photographer is constantly making sure I am not only creating images for my clients but also staying true to my creativity and shooting for myself too. It’s hard to make time for it, but I have found that it is the most important thing for me and my business in order to grow.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I have been a full-time wedding and couples photographer for two years, and am based in the Phoenix area. I love really natural, candid moments, so when photographing couples, I try to get to know them in the beginning of our session and see how they interact with each other and go for a feel based off of how they are together. Most of my couples are very fun and light-hearted and just want to have a good time, which is how I am too, so we click really well!

We always love to ask about the support network – have there been people, perhaps mentors or advisors, who have played a big role in your success?
My husband has been my biggest support as a small business owner. He has pushed me to grow myself and my business in ways I can’t begin to explain, offers words of encouragement, and is always finding solutions to problems I come across (mostly technology related, lol!).

When I came home from work two years ago crying that I was stressed out and didn’t have enough time for my job and my photography hobby, he sat me down in front of a computer and had me write a letter of resignation to hand in the next day, and that’s when my photography career took off. I would 100% not be where I am today without him.
