Meet Heather Fleckenstein of Spontaneous Tragedy Photography in Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Fleckenstein.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After high school, I was just as lost about what I wanted to do with my life like any 18 years old would be. During my senior photos, I was inspired to buy myself a camera and then went to visit family in Germany for six weeks, explore, take pictures and find what I love. I did just that, I came back to the states and got my Associate in Arts with photography and have been exploring the world around me ever since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, it hasn’t been an easy road to get to where I am today. Working full time and school full time is always a lot. Manageable but a lot. I’ve struggled in countless ways trying to get my work out there. Put it in gallery shows, and sending in to different contests. It did pay off when I finally got published in a business magazine. But booking clients is always a challenge when people flake consistently and don’t care when they waste your own time and money, I think a lot of artists go through that as well.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Spontaneous Tragedy Photography – what should we know?
I have shot many different kinds of photo “experiences” I should put it. When I first started out, I wanted to concentrate on more unique portraits, but I find myself going back to it and enjoying it even more with the knowledge I’ve learned over the years. But I also do extensive work with underwater photography and portraits in general. I’m most proud of my progress as an individual with my company, all my peers know me as the photo friend so they know I always bring a camera with me to adventure. My photo name is definitely something that sets me apart from others. I wanted something that reflected my life and put my soul into this company.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
To be my upmost successful, I find that knowing how to talk to people, direct them, and connect with them has made all the difference of moving forward in my success.
