Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Black.
Heather, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started with me as a little girl holding tools for my dad as he worked in his woodshop. I grew an appreciation for the skill that is woodworking. Fast forward just under 20 years and now I was a mother of three little kids, just moving back to the same area that my family still lived with three kids under three years old. (For the record, yes our youngest are twins for those wondering how is that we pulled that one off). While I love my kids more than anything I did feel like I needed a break from 24/7 mothering. My husband offered to watch the kids on a few of his days off while I visited my dad. While visiting we started working on projects, which I then sold online and then one thing led to another and now I have been working steadily for six months making all sorts of wood projects from small boxes to full sized bookshelves.
Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest part is figuring out the schedule; I love woodworking but being a mom and wife comes first. Luckily my husband is by far my biggest supporter in all of this. Almost all of his days off are spent watching our three kids home alone, which I can tell you from experience is FAR from relaxing. Sometimes he needs a break from being on duty at work and home constantly for weeks on end and that can get hard when trying to make adequate time to focus on my business. With sacrifice on both parts and that of some helpful extended family, we have pulled it off thus far and plan to continue.
Please tell us about your business.
My last name is Black and my dad is Taylor making us Black&Taylor, What sets us apart is we are a daughter and dad team. We specialize in wall decor. We focus primarily on shelving. The style we aim for is modern shapes in traditional colors. We like to think our designs fit into a modern or traditional home to bridge the transition between both types.
We LOVE custom work. We get orders for all sorts of great ideas that we make for clients, we try to stay affordable and approachable for anyone who has a great idea and just needs the tools and know how to make it a reality.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
While my home is in Sierra Vista most of my clients are in the Mesa/Phoenix area. I love networking and love how easy that is to do here. Just a few weeks ago I was invited by some local female small business owners to hang out and have a party. I had never met any of them beforehand but now have plenty of friends and business contacts from the event. The city lends itself to these kinds of fun spontaneous interactions and I love it.
