Meet Gregory Sutliff of Alcal Specialty Contracting in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Sutliff.

Gregory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Alcal became a part of Pacific Coast Building Products in 1971 and has had a presence in the Western US for almost 50 years. After the Great Recession of 2008, we diversified our product offerings to include installed insulation services for homeowners, with a dramatically increased focus on helping them improve their homes’ comfort and energy efficiency. By removing old contaminated or degraded attic insulation, air sealing the attic floor, and installing new non-toxic attic insulation at higher R-values, Alcal was able to expand its product offerings beyond the new construction residential and commercial insulation services portfolio it previously had concentrated upon. By adding residential energy efficiency retrofits, garage door service and new door installation and replacements – combined with excellent customer service, high-quality products and installation, Alcal is now better positioned to weather economic downturns while providing best in class service in the Phoenix/Tempe region.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing a business in a competitive market is always difficult – Phoenix is no exception. However, as company with a 50 year history in providing installed insulation services, we have deep experience in creating scheduling/operational efficiencies, leveraging material and equipment purchasing power, and building a culture and environment where employee turnover is low, the pay is good, and our portfolio of customers is diverse, interesting and an exciting group of developers, contractors and homeowners to work for. In this light, every obstacle we’ve come up against – whether it be lower quality and cost competitors, difficult economic conditions, or updating our product offerings – has been met by a group of Alcal employees who work hard, deliver excellent products, and provide the best customer service in the industry.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Alcal Specialty Contracting – what should we know?
Alcal Specialty Contracting, Inc. and its Home Services Division provide a broad range of installed insulation services, and garage door products to the new construction and retrofit markets the Phoenix region and surrounds. Built upon a broad cross-section of customers across the residential, multi-family, and commercial market segments, Alcal’s Home Services Division now provides retrofit Insulation Services to homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency and comfort of their older homes by removing old dirty, dusty and contaminated insulation, air sealing all of the tiny gaps and holes where conditioned air can escape the living space or dust and hot air can enter the living space from the attic, and then re-insulating the attic with new, clean environmentally friendly insulation. Because the majority of energy loss in a home occurs through the attic, the US Department of Energy recommends starting all home energy efficiency projects with a review of the attic and its existing insulation R-Value (the measure of how much the insulation in the attic resists the flow of heat into and out of the home). By removing the old dirty insulation, air sealing the attic floor, then re-insulating to R-38 or greater, Alcal’s crews and help homeowners save from 20 to 50% on their heating and cooling energy consumption.

As the person responsible for Alcal’s Home Services Division progress across 4 states, I am most proud of our teams of installation crews, production managers, account administration, and business development personnel who oversee the work we do. Between inventory control, fleet management, crew scheduling, customer service, and all account management tasks that go into serving every homeowner or contractor, Alcal’s personnel are dedicated to their job, committed to our customers, and provide the best value for installed insulation and garage door services in the region.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Alcal Specialty Contracting and its Home Services Division is built up on a foundation of integrity and accountability, mixed with a good dose of innovation and commitment to customer service. A construction company must employee safety at the top of its list of priorities and Alcal is no different in that regard and consistent training helps every employee work safely and be able to concentrate fully on their job knowing the company stands behind them with safe operations as priority number one. Lastly, our motto is “good people making things right” and this underpins our commitment to customer service and making sure the products we promise are what we deliver – and if unplanned situation occur that impact those promises, then we work hard to make sure that we do right by our customers and do not rest until they are satisfied with the products and services we have provided them.
