Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Gudorf.
Greg, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I joined Pure Flix in 2014 to help oversee the company’s development of a streaming video on demand service, PureFlix.com. The strategy was to develop a service with a subscriber base that would help fill in the gaps between our theatrical releases. We’ve been called the “Netflix for Christians” and there is some truth to that, but in my mind, we’re a lot more. Our mission is to change culture for Christ through media.
To that end, not only is all of our content free of sex, language and violence surprises, but we also have a cause marketing arm that donates each month to a charitable organization to help those in need. The funding for those efforts comes directly from subscriptions.
Our efforts seem to be working. We’ve been blessed with consistently strong subscriber growth, we’re continuing to provide jobs for those in the Phoenix area, and if you mention PureFlix.com to people, they just might smile and thank you for providing an alternative to traditional Hollywood fare.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a little smoother than expected in many cases, but like any start-up, there have been struggles along the way. There are a lot of streaming video services out there and maintaining subscriber growth month in and month out is challenging. But we’re up to it. We’ve driven great results since we launched in 2015 by adding more than 10,000 titles and original programming and by utilizing social and digital media in smart, cost-effective ways.
I think there’s a Higher Power looking over us…guiding our success.
Please tell us about PureFlix.com (Pure Flix Digital).
PureFlix.com is streaming video service that provides Family, Faith & Fun movies, documentaries, kid’s shows, educational content and original programming. We are a subsidiary of Pure Flix Entertainment, which focuses on theatrical releases, such as the “God’s Not Dead” franchise and many other great movies.
We’re proud of the fact that we’re helping families find shows they can watch anytime, anywhere without having to worry about language, sex or violence. Our greatest desire is to enable families to come together and enjoy entertainment without worrying about inappropriate scenes.
It’s gratifying for us to share good, clean entertainment and when we receive positive feedback such as, “finally, I can watch TV without my finger hovering over the mute button or my hands ready to cover the kid’s eyes”, well, that never gets old.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least about our city?
I like the business climate, but not always the actual climate.
There seems to be a willingness to work together among businesses in the Phoenix area that I haven’t seen in a lot of major metro areas. If you toss in the fact that we’re a Christian company it makes it even more amazing.
I split my time between San Diego (where I live) and the Pure Flix offices in Scottsdale, so let’s just say the summer heat takes a little getting adjusted to. The long-time residents tell me it’s not “hot” until the mercury reaches 110 degrees…like I said, I think I’m still adjusting.
