Meet Giovanni Hernandez of Colori Nails in El Mirage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giovanni Hernandez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Giovanni. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It started with having a want and desire to be my own boss and do something my kids could look up to. I’ve never been able to adhere to a set structure or agenda. I worked in a legal office before becoming a nail tech so structure and micromanagement was something that was very set in place in the office. I knew I wasn’t happy and a 9 to 5 wasn’t fulfilling that desire. I wanted more.

As a young girl, I always made it a habit of having my nails done. I felt it was part of my personality and is described in part who I was. The technique and challenge behind creating nails drew me to it. It wasn’t easy at all. Everything about it was hard but that’s what I liked about it. I took on the challenge put myself out of my comfort zone and five years later here I am.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was very tough in the beginning. By the time I started doing nails I had a 4-year-old and a 9-month-old baby. Being a mother is hard but I was able to manage. One of my biggest struggles was setting up myself as a nail tech and being noticed in an industry that not only is very big and growing but very competitive as well. I had to find what was going to set me apart from the rest. Many, many times I pulled out the drawing board and started over and over from step one. Still, to this day, I continue to do so.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in acrylic and hard gel nails or nail enhancements. I’m hard on myself so my clients know I’m a perfectionist, therefore, I have to get that nail shape right. If I don’t hear my client say “Yes! I love this shape” or “You always get my shape right” I’m not happy. They know that when they sit in my chair I’ll do whatever I have to, to deliver what it is they want. My company name is on those hands so I make it a priority to do my best. I believe that part of my business is what has drawn clients from different cities and states like California and New Mexico to come here to Arizona and get their nails done by me. As a nail tech, you push yourself and work hard to be seen by big nail companies in the nail industry in hopes of one day be recognized or become an ambassador to such. Colori Nails has had that privilege, something I’m very proud of is becoming an ambassador to Poochiez Nails – The Nail Art Boutique this has definitely been one of my proudest moments and an opportunity I’m forever grateful for.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Continue to grow. Continue to bring new techniques to Colori Nails but I’d mainly love to teach others. It wasnt easy for me at all so if I can help other up and coming nail techs I’d love to do so. I’d love to see this industry grow the way it has here in the U.S in Mexico. That’s home for me so teaching there is something I’d love to do.
