Meet Gil Donatelli of Gil Donatelli Music

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gil Donatelli.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began playing guitar professionally at the age of 15 and soon decided to study music at Berklee College of Music in Boston at age 18. When I graduated with a B.A. in Music Education, I kept “gigging” professionally concurrently with my career in music education.

I found that developing my band and music services as one would in any other business was more lucrative and more of a viable business than simply playing nightclubs. The diversity of repertoire, performance skills and commitment to client satisfaction and service is very demanding but rewarding both musically and financially. I enjoyed that challenge and running a small business and agency subsidized my teaching.

So essentially, I have been doing this since 1980, — first in Maine/New England and now in Arizona!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I enjoyed the musical and logistical challenges of growing the music agency and was blessed to have a couple of incredible mentors who were older and more established than I was. They were very generous with their help and tutoring and eventually, we became partners. Everybody won. Some people have a “lack” mentality and see everything as competition and as limited. But in this case, there was an abundance mentality and we are able to offer clients more choices.

Word of mouth is the best form of advertising and it is free! However, it is much easier in a small city like Portland, Maine than a huge valley like greater Phoenix – I have had to rely much more on marketing techniques and social media here to build the business.

We specialize in live music services for corporate entertainment and life events such as weddings. We offer various ensembles for solo to dance bands and can work within most budgets.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Future plans include branding more bands and expanding the agency.
