Meet Georgina Jaramillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgina Jaramillo.

Georgina, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Cactus Beehive was born with the birth of my grand-daughter Plum. I, like most new grand-mothers, want only the best for their grandchildren. I shopped the big name brands and all the best retail stores only to find that everything, wasn’t what I wanted for her. With each purchase, I grew more and more disappointed in the style, quality but mostly in harsh dyes and chemicals. With each item, we noticed her skin was having an allergic reaction to those things. It was then I decided I would start making organic clothing.

Growing up, my mother would make our clothes from my fathers & grand-father’s old button up’s. She made quilts from old t-shirts and often things purchased from the thrift stores (A place I’ve grown to love). I come from a big family, as did my mother. My grandmother, a mother of seven girls and one boy taught her children to sew (All of them). This was done out of necessity. I knew I had this talent, passed down through generations. Nostalgia can be a great motivator.

Fast forward six years….. I’m still working out of my home, still learning and loving this small business thing. I now have a graphic designer, and I’m able to make wholesale purchases. My focus is on comfortable, playful and affordable fashion, the clothes your children can play in.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This has not been easy. Building a small business in a world where everyone is an entrepreneur has been the hardest obstacle to overcome. From knowing what is needed to be a legal entity, to building a small community of friends. It’s all been tough. Growing a small business and working a full time job has always been my struggle. I work to provide not only for the family but for my business as well. Juggling funds from one account to another to catch up with the new season’s trend. Popup shop is both thrilling and exhausting.

Tell us more about the business.
I’d like to call myself a sewist (Is that even a word). I specialize in organic baby and toddler harem style leggings, available in sizes 3/6, 6/12, 12/24 and 2/3T. All dual sizing meant to grow with your child. Each pair is hand sewn in my home studio. I source only the best organic fabric and you’re sure to always find a cactus print or two.

I’m known for all Arizona themed prints. I love where I come from!

I also design graphics toddler tees with the help of designer Nikki Miles. Together we create fun Arizona themed designs like my AZ 5’C Tee. I also have a popular cactus hand painted tee.

As a brand, I’m most proud of my local roots. I am a native to Phoenix, born and raised. I’m proud to produce an all organic product and I believe this is what sets me apart from the many others.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’ve had many proud moments, but I’d have to say my proudest moment thus far is knowing that I created this. This business, this space and these things with only love and a dream of making things better for just one little girl. Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgina Jaramillo.
