Meet George Barraza of Private Wax in Visalia

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Barraza.

George, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Private Wax started in my residence June of 2018 in Visalia, California. It began really with just having a few close friends over to listen to jazz records. Then slowly, I started inviting artists from around the San Joaquin Valley to present monthly art exhibits in my small apartment. With the help of my family, we began to host 20-30 people with food, wine, and live music. I started a website and included interviews and photos of each artist and musician that were featured. It became to be a social hub for young informed individuals that were interested in experiencing something different. In January of 2019, I launched a series called Jazz On The Corner in collaboration with Visalia’s local music venue Cellar Door. The series’ aim is to promote and foster a thriving jazz scene in Visalia, California.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a challenge from the moment I began to realize the events started reaching a wider audience. I set a goal to host events once a month. I gave myself the responsibility to design a poster, scout for artists and musicians, present interviews, run a website, and promote through social media. I think I work better when challenges are present. It allows me to think outside of the box.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My family and I run a construction and cabinet business. I apply my skills as a carpenter to build the furniture I need to present a classic and warm aesthetic for my events. On the side, I DJ at various establishments around Central California. I’ve grown to be an avid collector of vinyl and often frequent my local record shop, Velouria Records. Nothing compares to the tangible and personal connection of music. I share my record collection to my guests at Private Wax. My background as a cellist has given me the opportunity to be part of my town’s local symphony. I enjoy being involved in the local music scene as much as I can. Private Wax is a space where people of all ages can listen to music and view art without preconceptions. I try my best to emphasize and recognize the individuals behind the talent. What sets me apart, I believe, is the form in which I approach the performances as a DJ and as a curator. However, it is also important to me to be inclusive and appreciate the various talents in Visalia and its surrounding communities.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important quality that has helped the success of my events is resilience. No matter what struggles are faced, it is necessary to move forward to achieve your goals.
