Today we’d like to introduce you to Genevieve Martin Del Campo.
Genevieve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2016, I became a mom to a rambunctious little boy. As a new mom, I was constantly questioning every decision I made. Was I doing a good job? Am I “bad” mom because I let him watch cartoons on my phone? Are my choices in discipline the right choices? What I learned along the way was that there is no right way to parent. Every family is different and every parent has their own way of doing things.
I then realized that part of the reason I questioned myself so much was because of the societal pressure to being a “good” mom. I felt that if I gave my son fast food, I was a bad mom. Or if I let him watch TV shows that were not educational, I was a bad mom. There is a lot of judgment that moms face every day and for every decision they make; and after having my daughter in 2017, I knew I wanted to put an end to the judgment. Although, I knew that task was almost an impossible one. It was then that I knew what I wanted to do.
That is when JJ Bella Co. was born. I wanted to create t-shirts that empowered all types of moms while bringing a smile to their faces. As a mom, I also know the struggle with body image that a lot of women face. Pregnancy and giving birth changes a woman’s body in so MANY ways, but bringing a life into this world trumps it all. So many women focus on getting their “pre-baby” bodies back that they don’t stop and think about the amazing thing their body just did. Or they focus on and are embarrassed by the stretch marks (I like to call them Tiger Stripes) that remain on their bodies and think they have to cover them up. You are strong Mama and you are powerful. And if our T-shirts can make a mama feel beautiful, strong, and confident in her own body, then we have done our job. 🙂
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have a three-year-old and one and half year old that take up A LOT of my time; a statement I know many moms can relate to. It is also difficult to work on our T-shirts or take good pictures for the website when I have little hands and feet EVERYWHERE I am trying to work.
We’ve also had some struggles with finding the right materials. When purchasing a T-shirt, you want it to last wash after wash while holding its shape and softness. In the beginning, we had T-shirts that did not have soft fabric and we had vinyl that did not hold up well in the wash. It wasn’t until after our first few orders that we found a supplier for T-shirts that are SUPER soft and don’t shrink. We now also use the number one rated vinyl, and I can tell you from experience that even after numerous washes, my T-shirts still look and feel amazing.
JJ Bella Co. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At JJ Bella Co., we create T-shirts for all types of mamas to empower women to be the best mama they can be. We do this with a touch of humor because let’s face it, motherhood can be stressful as heck and we all need a little humor in our lives from time to time. Whether you are a birth mom, adoptive mom, grandmother, step-mom, or fur mama, we have a T-shirt for you! We pride ourselves in making a product that can make a mama feel confident and strong in her everyday life. We do our best to come up with creative and unique sayings for our T-shirts so that you will stand out amongst the crowd. Every mama is unique in her own way and we strive to have our T-shirts match that.
Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a shy kid and loved school. Bowling was my thing, thanks to my Nana, and I was pretty damn good at it. Every Saturday, my cousins and I would bowl in a league and as each year passed, my love for bowling grew and grew. I contribute my outlook on failure to our bowling league. It was there that I learned that even though you may have a bad week, next week was a chance to make it right. Actually, now that I think about it, there are a lot of lessons that came out of that bowling league. One of the main lessons I took away from it is that when you first start out, you may not be the best, but with practice and determination, you get better and better until you are finally where you want to be.
