Today we’d like to introduce you to Geechie Billions.
Geechie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The journey started in 2010 with us recording songs on borrowed studio equipment from a neighborhood friend. We released songs daily and recorded other local artists helping us network and learn audio engineering. Slowly over the years, we acquired personal studio equipment, and by 2014 we were no longer using borrowed equipment. In 2014 we traveled to Los Angeles to pursue music with friends and to find an established engineer to mix our music because people complained about how the songs sounded. While in California, we worked with friends Dumbfoundead, Leland F, and Jazz & The Giant while partnering with an audio engineer, Callum Connor, to release better-mixed songs.
By the start of 2015, though, Leland and Jazz & The Giant quit music leaving Callum Connor free to work with Anderson paak as his DJ while forcing us to cut our losses and move back to Arizona to continue pursuing our goals. Continued developing Rarepopulation over the years, and in 2018 we partnered with NewYork based international label Bentley Records to distribute our music globally.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our biggest obstacles we’ve run into is not having feedback (friends) and being sabotaged by associates. In this line of work, feedback is essential, but as soon as we started recording in 2010, we lost all friends, even collaboration tracks would only see feedback for the other artists. The sabotage took many forms, “friends” running around slandering our name while were not around, music street team not helping, and associates derailing plans. “Friends” would attend parties and slander us, but since we’re not around, people would believe it. Artist on our street team like Leland F would not push our music even though we would promote for them, imagine how that looks? Anytime we incorporated someone into the plan, they always fail it from there end. Perfect example, when we started to get mad at the lack of support from Leland F, our co CEO at the time quit and hasn’t talked to us since.
Please tell us about RarePopulation Club.
RarePopulation Club is an independent record label looking to expand to different areas of business when applicable, like motocross. We offer our artists all rights as long as they promote the name. As well as we provide free studio time so an artist can record and release songs with ease.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If we had to start over, I would save more money up, and I would get all paperwork in line for the business in the early years. I would also look for a better team to help with the music in the first years, knowing how essential it is.
