Meet GarrettLee Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to GarrettLee Davis.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My Full name is GarrettLee Alexander Davis. My first name means kindhearted warrior(with a spear), and my middle name means leader of man. I’ve always striven to live up to the name my parents gave me (after all, I got it for my birthday).

Growing up, I was very engrossed with computers and technology in general. I marveled at how people could create worlds with electricity and electronic components. My first job was repairing electronics for my school district. My hobbies have always been centered out electronics whether that was rewiring an old guitar or converting an old game console into a portable(ish) handheld game.

Having developed my skills on the hardware side, I often found with new tech I needed to dive into the realm of coding/programming. I struggled with it deeply until I learned some coding skills through the University of Arizona’s coding bootcamp!

Please tell us about your art.
I love modifying and creating anything music related. I went to school for building and repairing stringed instruments at Roberto-Venn school of luthiery in Phoenix back in 2009. I’ve built guitar pedals, synthesizers, guitars, and loads of other fun electronic toys. Currently, I am working on a virtual pedalboard using the newfound programming skills I developed in the boot camp.

Here are some links to a couple of things I made:

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
You know, I think artists have a little more recognition in today’s culture than they did before. I think a lot of young people appreciate and dive in to the community with open arms. Arizona has a beautiful art scene and an amazing art middle/high school here in Tempe! If you are reading this and have kids, check out the New School for the Arts and Academics near Rural and Apache. They have an exceptional team of teachers and fantastic curriculum for any budding artist.

I think more cities should have first and third Fridays like we do. The Firehouse in Phoenix was an amazing thing that should happen in other cities (and re-happen here). They hosted visual and performing arts on a regular basis while allowing artists to live in a communal environment.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am currently still working on my website and portfolio with programming. My website is https://dtechdev.com it is a work in progress! I can repair/modify just about anything so if you’d like to support what I do, just send me an email or give me a call! My information can be found on the contact page of my site. Eventually I’ll have more pictures or videos of all my projects.
