Meet Gaby Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Paul.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Gaby. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been singing since I was very young. Around three years old to be exact. I was taking music seriously when I started writing songs as a teen. I was also going to weekly voice lessons, performing in downtown Minneapolis, along with singing in my high school choir. I’m proud of the training I’ve been able to get in my youth. It’s all brought me to where I am today, recording original music and doing gigs.

Has it been a smooth road?
My personal life has not been a “smooth road” and neither has my professional life. But I will say there are some parallels in both aspects of my life that have only made me more prepared for the entertainment industry. I was constantly bullied by my peers when I was a teen. Not just made fun of online due to cyberbullying, but also in school. There were classmates of mine, mostly girls, who would make fake profiles of me on social media just to humiliate me. Sometimes the harassment would go as far as trying to trip me before I did a solo in choir, they would also laugh at me and try to embarrass me about any little thing they could while in class. It was borderline obsessive. The common struggles in the music world is the harsh insults from strangers, along with rivaling against other competitive musicians. The internet can be toxic and I’ve received my fair share of hate comments here and there. Luckily, I do believe that if I was not on the receiving end of the school bullies in my early life, I would not have such a thick skin present day. The music industry demands a thick skin and you will die without it.

Please tell us about your art.
My music has an R&B/Soul feel with some Americana Southwestern vibes here and there. It is Blue-Eyed Soul with some desert flare. I think what sets me apart is I like to take a vintage sound and modernize it. Putting a fresh spin to a nostalgic vibe is what I’m known for.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Arizona is specifically good for my genre of music and aesthetic, just because I get so much inspiration from the Southwest. I’ve also gotten to know many talented artists in this city because downtown Phoenix has some great performance venues for networking.
