Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriella Wall.
Gabriella, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was originally born in Newbury Park, California and moved to Arizona when I was five years old. I went to school in Cave Creek from kindergarten to high school. After graduating from high school, I went on to community college for three years. In those three years, I changed my major three different times. At that point, I realized I was just wasting money and time, and I decided to finally tell my parents I wasn’t going to go back the next semester but instead that I wanted to go to beauty school. I had always wanted to go, and have always loved doing hair and makeup. I would always color my friend’s hair, and even my own, as well as practice makeup. I knew I would be good at it and already had some background knowledge. I attended Penrose Academy in the fall of 2016 and after completing 1,600 hours I finally graduated. It was a very challenging year, to say the least, it was a lot of information to take in. You don’t just learn about how to color or cut somebody’s hair, you have to learn about anatomy, chemistry, electricity, and so on. I don’t think most people realize that. I was fortunate enough to find a job in the beauty industry before actually graduating at Pucci Salon, and have been there ever since. Building up a clientele is a lot of work and takes time, but I’m surely getting there. Word of mouth is the most important thing, as well as having an Instagram page to showcase your work.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Cosmetology school was tough because I was there four days a week, about nine hours a day. I have always been a hard worker, and have been working ever since I turned 16. I have had two jobs on and off ever since. During school that only left three days a week to work, so I was working two days a week and attending school four days a week with Sunday being my only day off. I was serving at a restaurant while attending school and most days I would work doubles to supplement the lack of time being able to work enough. It was a very tough year, I was always tired.
Please tell us about your business.
I currently offer everything from men and women’s cut & colors to hair extensions. Color and extensions are what I love to do the most because of the extreme transformations that are possible. I truly take pride in my work. It is important to listen to what the client wants, and if it is achievable for them and why it may not be. It is my job to educate you, as the client, so you can better understand why something may not be the best fit for you and your lifestyle.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think there is necessarily anything I would have done differently. I got an assisting job before I even graduated school and started shortly after graduating and finished my assisting job in just about a year, and then got promoted to a full time stylist. I was lucky enough to find Pucci and am thankful that they pushed me!
