Meet Gabriel Bey of Moorish Manor Publishing, Management and Moor in Valley-Wide

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Bey.

Gabriel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a Composer, Publisher, Trumpeter and Leader of the band, Spooky Kool, Your Friend in the Spiritual Age, where you can experience the best in “Head Boppin’ Jazz.”

I perform with many different artists, but I’ve recently become engaged with a newly created band entitled “Shamen Call.” a venture in free music.

So what does this all have to do with my purpose of developing Phoenix into the center of the Entertainment Industry and my current efforts in Artist Development? For that, I have to take you back on a brief journey to my past.

I was raised in a declining but proud neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio named “Glenville” that was situated across the tracks from the affluent Village of Bratenahl. Those tracks exposed me to a very different lifestyle, and they lead to Cultural Gardens and Performance Plazas which impacted my life, constructed my character, and lead me to the world of Performing Arts.

My career included the City of Phoenix, leading a GIS Implementation Team in the Water Services Department, a Planning Commissioner in the City of Goodyear and an alum of LeadershipWest.

As I grew and matured in the corporate world, my music fell by the wayside; but as my career began to close, music resurfaced in my life. I discovered that the world has changed from my early years as a youth and the societal structure has opted for music and art to be removed from the educational stream. The new initiative was STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). I understand competing on the world stage, but how could we remove the Arts and not realize how this would impact the loss of culture and quality of life. The activities that kept some students interested in school.

Future generations would not engage in the arts for there would be little exposure/concern for them during our formative years. Fewer would pursue the arts for there would be a narrow window of opportunity for youth to learn. If we don’t expose our youth to the arts, someone else will, and the results for the future of long-established arts organizations would be devastating.

So much for gloom and doom! The Arts exist, but exposure and techniques have changed. Technology has become the teacher and personal interest has become the path for learning and creating. Why not provide growth opportunities for those who dream?

Here is where my desire to become an Architect and to use the skills of life long learning to create opportunity and build paths for the future would be utilized. I am to raising awareness of the need for arts to be included in the educational mantra of STEM and change to acronym to STEAM. The plan is to continue recording music by Spooky Kool. Focus on Grammy award-winning music to be utilized in film and television. Employ my friends from the Eliance, where Entrepreneurs Align. The Community that will manifest all aspects of my vision a reality.

Artist Development is the first stage of my vision and an area that I can be impactful. I am utilizing KingdomworK Studio to record and develop new artists and attract other artist and industry to the area. Use my relationship with the Musician’s Union, Artlink, and other organizations to expand performance opportunities with an emphasis on raising Quality of Life in support of Economic Development attracting business and artists to the area.

The goal is to grow a successful industry that will become the root for arts and culture and to build the industry beyond our current boundaries.

Advocate for the return and/or increase of courses to support the arts and artistic industry as a focus for economic growth and job recruitment.

Support the industry until this becomes the new center for arts and entertainment.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No path is without challenges. No desire can be understood without sacrifice.

Personally, I’ve presented my vision to various organizations and agencies that I believed would make short work of my plan and would benefit from its implementation, only to be told that I should narrow my goals to something more manageable. Your vision is too big.

Collectively, I’ve discovered that there are too many self-serving agencies and organizations that minimize the growth and effectiveness of outreach and funding that would occur if there were a united front.

I can’t tell you how discouraging it is to be minimized by individuals with no vision or dream. It restricts access to others who may see as you do, but it does help you to realize the if you have a dream, it is you who much pursue it.

The process is long. Not only in the visualization that includes such aspects of planning, designing, building, and operation, but in the manifestation, realization, and implementation phase of your dreams and visions. The only way that I’ve been able to realize progress is to look backward to see how much has been accomplished. Conversely, looking ahead gauges what else must be done.

Relationships make all obstacles opportunities.

Moorish Manor Publishing, Management and Moor – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is called Moorish Manor Publishing, Managing and Moor. The name was conceived in the seventies when I used to create mixtapes of Jazz and I needed a DJ handle. I keep the company as an open secret because I can only handle so many clients that I can give personal attention.

The company is registered with ASCAP as a Publishing Company and monitors the royalties of several artists. Beyond that, the company manages, as the agent for KingdomworK Recording Studio, which I consider an asset to my vision of growing the industry here in the valley.

I specialize in facilitation under the umbrella of Moorish Manor and work with such organizations as Artlink, the Musician’s Union, to name a few. I am an alum of LeadershipWest and a member of Eliance, Where Entrepreneurs Align.

I also sit on the Music Advisory Board for Scottsdale Community College.

My list of “People of Importance” sets me apart from other companies as does my two main objectives, Artists Development and Growing the Industry.

I’m most proud of the path of “Spooky Kool, Your Friend in the Spiritual Age.” With three albums and a professional video, the group is growing in popularity on the global platform.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Turning to my list of accomplishments, my proudest moments are recording and placing artists music on distribution list, but I look forward to the showcase of new artists and the launch of “Shamen Call.” This is the group to watch as they bring attention to Phoenix and the valley. Also, my induction into Eliance. Not only a community of entrepreneurs but where entrepreneurs align.
