Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabbi Paulo.
Gabbi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first got started in the arts when I was a kid. My mom told me that when I was in kindergarten, my teacher made a remark about my lack of artistic skills and how I couldn’t color in the lines. Since receiving that feedback, she enrolled me in art camps, choir groups, and other extracurriculars to cultivate my skills and widen my interests.
The majority of my life has been about music thus far. It wasn’t until about two years ago that I really started taking art seriously. That, coincidentally, was the same time I changed from a music performance major to a BA in Communication. I went through a period of misplaced emotions until I stumbled upon an old sketchbook. That moment led me to rekindle a love of painting.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My family split up when I was about 12 which changed a lot for me. Many of my struggles became internalized and loneliness was the result. I wasn’t inspired and was operating in a mindset of fear. This caused performance anxiety in all aspects of my life and I rarely shared my gifts with the world. I’m currently finding my way back to stability and I’m so thankful to have found a new outlet.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
For starters, I am an artist. I use a few different mediums to experiment with, such as acrylic paint, Procreate, and the typical pen and paper. I have painted cartoons of friends, illustrated figures, and sketched tattoo ideas. My most recent venture is in fluid art, and this is where I make most of my sales. Not only is it therapeutic to make, but it makes lovely home decor.
Out of all that I’ve done, I’m most proud of my pen work. There’s nothing like the feeling of ink on paper and it’s harder to correct mistakes. This makes it more rewarding when the piece looks great.
What sets me apart is my eclectic style. I don’t limit myself to just one medium, so people can see a variety of pieces from me.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have to give credit to my family, for without them I wouldn’t have 90% of my personality. They’ve also given me the push I need to pursue my dreams.
Mom, Dad, Grace, Brendan, and Jared, thank you.
My best friend Reagan, for being a literal angel every step of the way. I’ve known this woman since 7th grade and she’s been so supportive of my outlandish ideas.
My boyfriend Lacour, for being my confidant and showing me what I want and don’t want out of this life.
My friend Sarah, for being a wonderful friend and also for commissioning the most pieces from me.
Everyone who has ever commissioned a piece from me, thank you for your support. It means more to me than you will ever know.
