Meet Frescotoldya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frescotoldya.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My friends call me FRES. I was born Kyle Simkins in Grand Rapids, Michigan on October 30th, 1989. My parents moved us around when I was a kid until we finally settled down in the east valley of Phoenix when I turned about 15. When we first moved from the midwest to Phoenix, I had went from a graduating class size of 54 to over 1200 as a junior in high school. It wasn’t until years later that I really noticed this juxtaposition and I didn’t notice because of Hip-Hop music. Hip-Hop/Rap music made me feel like I fit in exactly where I needed to be in that awkward situation. It gave me a voice, a crew to run with & a strong purpose.

It was in those times and those early years that TOLDYA was really born. Hip-Hop/Rap music has blessed me with some great opportunities since then. I have opened up for Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Dom Kennedy, Pac Div, Wale, Freddie Gibbs, Fashawn, and many others. I have had my music played on Arizona radio stations (Power 98.3 FM & 101.1 FM The Beat) and have been told my music has changed lives for the better. The latter gives the most power and vindication of all. I hope this year to put out more art that changes lives, perspectives, and hearts. This is really what TOLDYA is about as a brand & through me as an artist.

Please tell us about your art.
I rap but sometimes I sing and make weird noises with my voice so I really consider myself a vocalist. I also produce music & have made beats for a lot of dope artists out here locally. The possibilities are really endless on how I create a record or a song from the beginning. I like to start on the piano because that is the instrument I know how to play. I just started getting really good at playing & it is by far my favorite instrument. You can easily translate whatever emotion you want to get out by picking the right keys and build from there. The inspirations for most of my songs come from stories & experiences I have had or others close around me.

Most of my raps I consider to be like poetry. I will go multiple directions to intrigue whoever is listening into my mind or world. I hope that people listening to my music feel like they experienced something fresh & new. Everytime they hear a new FRESCOTOLDYA song or production, it will sound unique compared to everything else that is out. From there, I hope from my music that people take away inspiration to stand out just by being themselves and to appreciate life more.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket? The proof is in the pudding? Just be yourself.
