Meet Frank Ybarra in Moon Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Ybarra.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Frank. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since childhood, I have always been interested in art. At first, I did a lot of drawing since paint wasn’t always in my parent’s budget. While in college, I decided to study graphic design. I also took painting and drawing classes. After college, I got a job working for a local healthcare company as a designer and illustrator. I worked in this capacity for about 13 years. All the while, working on paintings and getting involved in the local art community. After leaving my job, I focused on commercial illustration, but also working on fine art pieces at the same time. Eventually, I flipped my focus to fine art. I still take in a commercial project every once in a while. But painting is my main interest.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Relatively smooth. Fortunately, I can pick up a commercial project every once in a while.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
A writer and art critic once described my art as “neo cubist.” I thought that sounded about right. I like to take everyday objects, landscapes, and people and “skew” the perspectives a bit. I work in acrylic on canvas, plus I enjoy printmaking as well. I guess my art is known for their bright colors as well as subject matter. Most of my work has a back story to it. Mostly about growing up here in Phoenix as well as my Mexican heritage.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I am a native of Phoenix, so this the only home I know. It’s amazing to see the growth over past 30 years or so. I am also happy to see that our art community has grown immensely since I began showing my art in the late ’80’s.
