Meet Jane Adler of Facial Art by Jane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Adler.

Jane, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am the proud owner of Facial Art by Jane. I began my journey as a cosmetic tattoo artist in the early 1990’s. I am blessed to have found my true calling. I have never been a 9 to 5 girl. In fact, I think so far out of the box I do my best work on my own. I was born with an eye for color and balance. I just never knew what to do with it, until the world of cosmetic tattooing was introduced to me. Funny too because I have exclusively used manual tools from the beginning. The same exact tools used today by people claiming that microblading is new.

I can assure all it is not. It is a very old form of etching color into the skin. The only thing new and fresh today is social media. The explosion of marketing is outrageous in many cases. Why, because the truth has been lost in translation. Sadly, with time greed and corruption can be hard to deal with when your old school. I personally, like so many of us have trained so hard, today everyone has access to 2-day classes that are just so sad. I guess I can be called at this point, a purist of this art form. I refuse to fall into the new mindset of multi-marketing, gorilla marketing.

So, with all that said, the secret to longevity is consistency and honesty. I never lie to my clients and the truth. Most clients love me for this! Some do not! I will never tell a client what they want to hear if it is not correct. It is my job first to do safe and clean work in a professional environment. Second to create beauty. It is my job to design and pick colors. It is my job to make my clients a better version of themselves. I never ever tattoo trendy permanent cosmetics. It is my job to say no when needed. Not every client is a good candidate and some have unrealistic expectations. That is why it so important to be a member and certified with Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals.

Properly done permanent cosmetics is an enhancement of one’s natural features. Not to replace trendy makeup. We do have more obstacles these days due to all the antiaging skin care products and eyelash growth products, than back in the days. So, I do my best to educate my clients.

I specialize in natural looking textured eyebrows. I enjoy all the other procedures to from eyeline to areola restoration.

Love what you do and you will rock at it!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Any road can be tuff. The hardest part is the first 5 years. So much to learn. Practice, practice and more practice. I think the hardest part of my job is dealing with so many personalities. One must be gifted at communication and be able to say no. So important. It is also a very physically demanding career. Back when I started there were very few resources. I was blessed early on to meet Alexi Lawson who was an inspiration. Today the challenges are an over-saturated industry. So many take a two-class then come home and teach two-day classes. OMG! I had at least 400 hours of classes until I could truly think on my own. It takes years to be good and even more to grow.

As I mentioned before, I am old school and you have to earn your stripes. It is also very expensive to learn and almost more to run a successful business. All supplies are single service. At least in my studio. Very important and one must have a strong work ethic and not be in a hurry. Cosmetic tattooing is a process.

Facial Art by Jane – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hmmmmm. I think I am different because I run a private studio and my only competition is myself. I do mostly natural looking brows, then eyes, areolas and lips. I do not do that many lips and more. Too much sun damage in AZ. I am most proud of my ability to reshape brows. To apply that to a client’s bone structure and muscle tone. To be able to see how a client’s face is going to age and always keep it classic.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Well, it sure is not money. I define success by not being greedy and by always doing my best with the canvas I have to work on. I keep it real. My reputation is everything and I take pride in that.
