Meet Evan Zavitz of Life In Rapture Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Zavitz.

Hi Evan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was always fascinated with the technical and creative aspects of film and video. I can remember early memories of my fiddling around with an old Sony tape recorder my father had for home movies. I was always just curious about how it worked, all of the different buttons, and the sort of romantic idea it presented in my head.

I always kept my eye on developments in cameras and film techniques over the years and tried to be involved as much as I could. I was always trying to borrow my Dad’s camera on family trips and also got involved in my school’s media arts program — shooting short films and recording events.

Flash forward to my time in University and my family is preparing to go on a weeklong trip to Miami and Cuba. I was definitely in a growth mindset being at school at saw an opportunity to go full bore into this hobby/interest of mine. The day before the trip, I went to Best Buy with the goal of getting a camera that could take some great pictures. I did little to no research and didn’t really have the slightest clue about any of the technical specs that might be relevant to the type of rig I would need. I just talked to the salesperson and described what I wanted to do.

I told him I was pretty serious about getting into the hobby and even if I didn’t know how to take full advantage of the camera now, I wanted something that I could grow into. He ended up steering me to a Nikon D750 with a 24-120mm kit. It was expensive, but I had conviction. I pulled the trigger and I was off to the races.

That was in 2018 and for the past 4 years, I’ve learned a ton about the art and craft of this hobby I LOVE. My interest and drive to learn have led me to some great opportunities as well. I started building my portfolio and getting professional work ranging from photo/video production for an experiential tech startup at UA, the travel and tourism publication Tucson Guide, and most recently, a startup called Billight.

My current initiatives revolve around turning this experience into marketable services. I’m investing in my company and growing my skills and service offerings to appeal to more clients. It’s been an incredible road so far and I’m excited to see where a little more time and effort will take me in the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is never easy and there are more days than not when I question my efforts and initiative. But that’s a story as old as time. I’ve only been working as a professional photographer for a few years and I still have a lot to learn.

Of course, I want more clients and better opportunities but I’m proud of what I have achieved so far and I’m grateful to have already had so much success. It’s all a learning process and I’m confident that if I keep working at it, I’m going to end up somewhere I could only dream of today.

We’ve been impressed with Life In Rapture Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Life In Rapture Photography is the company I established as the vehicle for my photo, video, and marketing services.

My expertise in commercial photo and video for businesses as well as portrait photography.

Repeat clients of mine include Tucson Guide Magazine as well as Billights where I have contributed written articles, imagery, and video that showcase unique experiences and benefits to readers and viewers. The best part about working with clients like this is the connections that I make and the opportunity to highlight other entrepreneurs in my community to a wider audience.

I enjoy working on a variety of projects and offer a skillset and expertise that can contribute to different brands and industries harmoniously. I often find that when I’m working on a project, I’m not just the photo/video guy — with a background in Digital Marketing and training in Business and Entrepreneurship I can identify with my client’s needs and help formulate better solutions for them.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
While I don’t have a consistent mentor for photography, I have had the privilege of bumping into a few notable photographers from the Tucson area. Dominic Bonuccelli and Steven Meckler have both offered me time and insight along the way.

The hardest thing to do is just find initiative, the rest comes easily. I’ve made a variety of connections, found leads, and learned a ton just by picking up the phone and dialing. Most everyone I have bumped into doesn’t have a huge ego and is genuinely interested in offering some time and energy to get you on the right track.

Social media is a great tool to connect but, getting face-to-face is unmatched. I’ve found that when I’m able to meet people in person and get my energy and personality across, even better energy has been reciprocated.
