Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan and Kayli Norris.
Evan and Kayli, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I (Evan) bought my first couple houseplants, some cacti, about three years ago on a whim. Before long, those two plants turned into 25 and I was hooked. When I met Kayli, she’d struggled to keep plants alive in the past, but still loved the idea of an indoor jungle. So we went plant shopping and found some low-maintenance plants that she could care for.
When we got married and purchased our home, our interest quickly became an addiction! Today, we have over 140 plants and counting and love learning about new types and varieties. Because of our love for plants, we have a dream to one day start a plant shop of our own.
Has it been a smooth road?
Learning to care for plants involves a lot of trial and error, and sometimes even some tragedy along the way! We’ve killed our fair share of plants because we didn’t fully understand the specific needs that each individual plant has. Losing a plant is not only disappointing, but it can be expensive, so we’ve been diligent about gaining knowledge and expertise that will make not only our personal plant collection but also our future plant shop, successful.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
We recently took the small step of establishing our own inventory of plants that will be the precursor to our shop!
Some plants have the incredible ability to be cut down to pieces, only to grow an entirely new plant from that fragment. This process is called propagation and is the best way to grow your own crop of plants organically. We’ve taken some mature plants and cut them strategically into cuttings that will soon become mature plants of their own.
We believe many people have lost a bit of their connection to nature in our modern world. Having plants indoors helps to reestablish that connection. We also believe that being around plants is good for your health and well-being, and hope that our passion for plants will be contagious and that we can provide knowledge and trusted expertise for our future customers.
We also hope to be a trusted resource for our neighbors and community. To have someone come into our shop, who has struggled with and killed any plant they’ve tried to care for, leave with confidence and with a plant that is right for them and their home; that’s our goal.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Kayli was born and raised in Scottsdale, and Evan has lived in the Valley for a little over six years. We love that Phoenix has countless delicious food options and year-round sunshine! We also love that the Valley has something for everyone. If you love entertainment in the city, Phoenix has it. If you love the outdoors, Phoenix has that too.
We don’t love the heat, but who does?! We also think the plant community is relatively small and would love to see that change!
