Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Jannotta.
Eva, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up outside Washington, DC in Maryland. I had the kind of parents who, once I was old enough, taught me how to take the bus and metro instead of driving me around. I never suspected how valuable that self-reliance would be for entrepreneurship.
My parents are both are engineers by trade, but my mom taught herself how to be a teacher so she could homeschool me and my two siblings. My dad was always DIY-ing updates to the house, yard, and cars. One time I saw a book about indoor plumbing on the shelf – and that’s how I learned my dad was installing a bathroom by himself in the basement! My parents’ creativity and entrepreneurial spirit inspire me.
I started my company after a full-time job I loved went south. I used to wish I had a more “aspirational” story: something like, “I always knew I wanted to be a blah blah blah,” but the truth is that my business began from a career crisis. The more entrepreneurs I meet, the more I realize how common that is. Once I learned how quickly employment can change, I realized I don’t want to be reliant on one person or company for my livelihood.
This experience made it clear that if I’m going to be beholden to anyone, I want it to be ME. There is nothing like having your own economic fate in your hands. Sometimes, it gives me anxiety, but it’s POWERFUL. I built my company to mission-driven entrepreneurs and businesses because I believe that doing business for good is non-negotiable.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been the bumpiest road of my life! The biggest struggle has been and still is my own mind.
When I first heard that “mindset” is a crucial part of success, I thought it was bullshit. I thought, “I’ll know success when I see it, and it looks like a lot more fame, fortune and accolades than I have right now.”
Then during my first year of business, my anxiety got so bad I had to see a therapist! Now, I realize how much my thoughts and fears get in my own way.
When you’re building a business, EVERYTHING there is to do must be internally motivated. It takes a lot of energy and discipline, and there are countless opportunities for thoughts like, “you’re not working fast/hard/smart enough” or “what if you fail/no one likes you/no one buys fro you” to come up. Working through these thoughts is a continual challenge.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Simply Put Strategies – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Simply Put Strategies is a high-touch, full-service marketing agency for mission-driven entrepreneurs and businesses. (My dad came up with the company name – thanks, Dad!)
We specialize in two things:
1) Worry transfer: Our clients are super smart, creative, purposeful people who wear too many hats. We fix that by taking on the marketing design, management, and analytics hats, so our clients have more time and energy to do what they enjoy most.
2) Marketing with data and feeling: People are motivated by feelings (more than we’d like to admit). We build relationships and engagement online using a combination of data, empathy, and storytelling to make honest, emotional connections with our clients’ audiences.
I’m most proud of the level of service we provide our clients. I know each and every one of them personally. I love chatting with them, learning with them, hearing about their kids, brainstorming with them, and generally being friends. My clients often tell me how much they enjoy working with me, and that’s when I’m known, we’re doing it right. When my clients feel heard, seen, and appreciated, it’s a job well done.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I LOVE Phoenix! I live downtown, and it’s so much fun to be within biking and walking distance of so many events, cafes, restaurants, museums and more.
I grew up outside DC, where traffic is horrible at every time of time of day, parking is a nightmare, and lines for restaurants and events are long. I love that Phoenix offers all the amenities of a great city without being crowded.
One of the first things I noticed when I moved here are all the terrific independent cafes, full of art, local events, and delicious baked treats. You can often find me at Giant Coffee or Lola Cafe.
My least favorite part of living in Phoenix is the air quality and dust. Sometimes, I choose to stay indoors even when it’s nice out because the air quality is so poor. I wish that were different!
