Meet Erika Edholm and Kate Mellow of Bloom + Blueprint Event Co. in Central Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Edholm and Kate Mellow.

Erika and Kate, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Bloom + Blueprint was born from a 16 year friendship between Kate and myself. In 2015, after styling and designing weddings and events for family and friends as a hobby, Kate asked me to coffee during our lunch break to “talk”. Over Starbucks and parfaits, the planning and decor company that B+B is now was born. We’ve had this yin and yang thing going on for years and it makes for the most perfect partnership; Kate is a visionary who has a unique talent to bring client ideas to life, and I love the art of problem solving and thrive on logistics. We prioritized building a brand that valued transparency and affordability in an industry that isn’t known for either of those things. We are two low key gals, who love making events happen, and doing good work for good people!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We both think that anyone who says that business ownership is smooth is being slightly dishonest. The joy and struggle of being a #girlboss for us is that you have to be willing and able to evolve as your business grows; failure to do so can definitely impact success. For the first few years of our business Erika still worked full time during the day, and while we made it work, that was a struggle we had to work through – having one of the owners be unavailable or have limited flexibility. Every once in a while the fact that we do operate so differently than other wedding industry companies is the very thing that causes some confusion; clients are so used to how things are that when we articulate our approach and philosophy it can be hard for them to grasp at first.

Please tell us about Bloom + Blueprint Event Co.
Bloom + Blueprint is a planning + design + floral company. We pride ourselves on a down to earth, transparent, committed, and super fun approach to events. Paired together we create a streamlined planning experience, with an emphasis on unique design! We offer full planning, partial planning, month of coordination, design packages and floral design. Our pricing is listed on our website so clients know what to expect before they ever come in to have a consultation with us! We don’t operate in a minimum or price per floral which we think makes us unique in our market. We wanted to create a company that offered a quality service but was accessible to all events types and budgets. Our brand sets us apart and is what we are most proud of; we’ve built a brand that is recognizable and funky and reflective of who we are as people, and built an amazing team that supports the vision we’re trying to build! The #bbsquad makes Bloom + Blueprint what it is!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In the beginning, we tried to make Bloom + Blueprint everything to everyone! We quickly realized we needed to boil down what we offered to only the things we were truly passionate about and skilled at. Outside of that, I don’t think there is much we would change – each challenge was a learning opportunity to grow as people, business owners and a brand. The business and our offerings have evolved over the years, but the company is still true to our initial core beliefs; make our brand transparent, our pricing accessible online and offering beautiful events at an attainable price point.
