Meet Erik Carrasco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erik Carrasco.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Phoenix Arizona. I am the youngest of all my siblings and I looked up to them for guidance. My oldest sister loved to draw and paint and I naturally just got inspired and wanted to be as good as her. I remember as early as the second grade; kids would gather around to watch me draw, this still happens now but we are all much older now. I continue to let myself be inspired by new ideas and new people in my life. I feel it’s like a cycle and I will inspire others along the way.

Please tell us about your art.
I practice with many mediums, however, I mostly use watercolor. I love to create things unimaginable due to my love for surrealism.

My goal when I paint is to fill in the entire paper with different creatures and images. I want to give the prospector a view of a different reality and I want to keep them looking and searching for new things. A lot of the subjects in the work have their own meaning but usually are inspired by love.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I have dedicated a lot of my time to my art along with a good portion of my money. I do it because I love it and I believe it will all pay off. I believe all if not most artists suffer but I believe it’s the suffering that helps us grow and understand who we are.

I post pictures of most of my work on Instagram (@ErkThaPerp) but you also find some of my pieces done with spray paint at Unexpected Art Gallery.

People can support my work by sharing my art and offering commissions. I also set up a First Friday booth when there is time and they can support by simply purchasing some art.
