Meet Emily and Zack Barna of boompromo in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily and Zack Barna.

Emily and Zack, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Zack and Emily have been married for 14 years and have been in business together for 12 of those years. We started boompromo in April 2007 after working in the marketing/promotions industry for a couple of years and discovering that both of us possessed an entrepreneurial spirit that we wanted to explore. We launched the company with a handful of clients and a home office in our tiny condo in Phoenix, and although we possessed a vague idea of how to run a business, we look back and laugh about how much we didn’t know that we didn’t know! We were fortunate to have a wonderful network of friends and colleagues who really helped jumpstart the success of boompromo. Over the past 12 years, we have experienced steady growth, including 20% year-over-year revenue growth for the past three years.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a mostly smooth road, but of course, we have had ups and downs over the years. Owning a business is not for the faint-hearted! Gone is the stability of an established salary and corporate-matched 401k. In the early years of the business, we really made up the rules as we went along, learning by trial and error. But as the company has matured, we’ve invested in some external resources that have been key to helping us grow and thrive. And we both agree that we wouldn’t trade the freedom — creatively and time-wise — for all of the stability and security in the world.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about boompromo – what should we know?
Since 2007, boompromo has been dedicated to helping marketing departments solve problems and look great doing it. From providing fresh promo products and custom apparel ideas to building online stores free of charge, we’re focused on making the lives of our clients easier. We specialize in helping marketing teams support their branding initiatives with custom gear that fits their budget, brand standards, and company vibe. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional service and being a proactive, creative, and dependable partner.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
When we surpassed the $1 million mark in 2016, it was a really proud moment for our team. Hitting that revenue goal unlocked the opportunity to participate in Entrepreneurs Organization (EO) of Arizona, which has been an invaluable resource and support system for both of us as we have pursued this entrepreneurial path. It’s so helpful to have a sounding board of other business owners who can advise us on issues and challenges that we face in the business, and share in our celebrations when we experience success.
