Today we’d like to introduce you to Emby Alexander.
Emby, Kyle Grabski, Austin Harshman, Tim Arimborgo, and Jeremy Lentz met in college studying audio production and jazz. Jorge Valdez is a childhood friend.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Although we have lots of support around the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and even in London and Wellington (NZ), we have had some backlash here in our own hometown of Phoenix. We have tried to “fly the Phoenix flag” where ever we go. We have been called the “Sound Of Phoenix”. For as many people who get behind us, we have as many people saying we don’t deserve the title; we aren’t good representatives of Phoenix. You try to ignore the negativity but it’s definitely noticed. We are leading the way of having Phoenix viewed as a center of intelligent, inventive, and creative art.
Please tell us about Emby Alexander.
Emby Alexander is known for our multi-media approach. We have more than just music. We have interactive live concerts using the audience’s cell phones to create feedback loops (known as the “Emby Echo”). We project experimental film on to our bodies or behind us during concerts. We have worked with lots of talented filmmakers including Trevvor Riley (LA), Jon Jenkins (NYC), and Shaunte Glover (PHX) to create visual art to accompany some of our music. We just released our 12th self-produced music video “Sunlight (In The Back Of Your Head)”.
Emby has just finished the sound track for Trevvor Riley’s film “Chameleon”. Emby’s sound track has been nominated for Best Score at Los Angeles Film Awards 2018! The lead in “Chamelon”, Sprios Psihos, is up for Best Actor, and Brandon T. Hickey is up for Best Sound Design, too!
I think I’m most proud of touring Mexico and Canada. Creating something and then meeting people who seemingly have little in common with you are suddenly vibing with it. Connecting with it. That’s special. Setting out to be yourself at any cost and seeing others identifying with you is the ultimate reward.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. I’m very happy for all the ups and downs. They are all part of the process.
