Today we’d like to introduce you to Elyse Pelton.
Hi Elyse, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My story is not traditional, “I grew up baking with my mom and grandma”. My mom did not like baking and when she did, it was out of a box. My grandma passed away when I was young and my other grandmas lived in different states. I grew up watching cooking and baking shows, this is where my dream began. I never would have imagined myself being where I am today; I was always in sports and wanted to be a physical therapist. After going through high school and working at restaurants, I realized I loved working with food. It was the year 2018 when I realized, “I should start a baking page!” Not too long after that I was making tiered custom wedding and birthday cakes.
I went through college at ASU and received two business degrees all while running my business full-time (and working part-time). After graduating, I decided it was time to rebrand from Pelton Bakes Custom Cakes to Loopy Whisk Bakery. I now have a team of four, working out of a shared commercial kitchen. We’re a woman-owned small business that brings some of the best baked goods and pastries to local coffee shops, farmers’ markets, and our online bakeshop. We love bringing people together over good food and conversation. We pride ourselves on using high-quality and local ingredients. We truly believe in the power of food, and the nurturing love it can provide to families, friends, and strangers. That is why we are excited to share our products with people like you who value community, culture, and small business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been far from a smooth road, but I’ve learned so much along the way.
Starting a business isn’t easy. There are plenty of pitfalls, and there will be many more in the future. I may be filled with stress and anxiety half the time but I am also filled with happiness and pride. The rewards are worth it—and so is the risk.
That’s what I keep reminding myself every day: this is what I am meant to do. It may not always feel like it, but there’s a reason for everything… and this is it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Loopy Whisk Bakery is a local Arizona bakery established in 2018. The owner Elyse Pelton started out as a small home baker making beautiful custom cakes for individuals around the valley. She was able to create edible works of art that complimented any event, such as weddings and birthdays! In 2022, we decided to take things a step further, rebrand, and start specializing in pastries. After years of perfecting recipes and flavors, our pastry chef and owner, Elyse had the brilliant idea of sharing our items with local shops and farmers’ markets. Loopy Whisk now supplies multiple coffee shops around Arizona, attends farmers’ markets, and has an online bakeshop!
We are known for our innovative and nostalgic flavors, both sweet and savory. Loopy Whisk Bakery’s best sellers are the toaster tarts, oatmeal creme pies, cruffins, and chocolate chip cookies. You can’t miss any of these items—they’re all so delicious! Our toaster tarts are a special treat! Delicious handmade puff pastry with a sweet or savory filling, shaped like your classic pop tarts with similarity to toaster strudels!
And then there are our chocolate chip cookies. These are not your classic chocolate chip cookies: fluffy with a slightly crisp outside, studded with chocolate chips, rolled in more chocolate chips, and topped with a hint of sea salt. They’re everything you could want in a cookie—and more! These are just some of the things that have made us one of the most popular bakeries in the area.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The bakery & cafe industry is on the rise and has a current market size of $17 billion. Based on personal experience and research, the bakery industry will continue to play a huge role in the booming quick food category.
People are changing the way they buy food; they want local, fresh, and trendy. I expect there to be a large shift in the health and wellness aspect of the bakery industry. Bread and pastry are on the rise and bold flavors are trending. It is definitely a steadily growing industry and I am glad to be a part of it!
