Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Elizabeth Cruz.
Dr. Cruz, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I opened my own Gastroenterology practice in December 2007. By the end of 2007, I had approached my partner Tina telling her how frustrated I was with the fact that I was running so many tests on people for everything to come back negative. That I was seeing younger and younger patients in my office with the same digestive issues I was used to seeing in older patients. That it broke my heart to have to tell a 22-year-old they’d have to be on a PPI medicine for the rest of their life. It just wasn’t right and I felt like we were missing something. Tina and I went on a two-year journey learning everything we could about digestive health from a more holistic standpoint – food, supplements, pharmaceuticals, how the body truly works (the stuff you don’t learn in med school).
After the two years, we had learned so much we felt obligated to share it with our patients. We started the wellness portion of our practice in 2010 and have never looked back. We have written three books available in English and Spanish. We put on regular seminars in our office to introduce our patients and clients to what we do and why. We have a core set of supplements that continue to change people’s lives, we offer an online home study program that is teaching our patients and clients about their body, food, water, stress, rest, how to detox properly, move the body, etc. We have people traveling to us from the east valley and up north just because of our holistic approach. We are shipping our products all over the world at this point. We also started a podcast a few years ago. We have over 300 shows and tens of thousands of listeners.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, there have been so many struggles and setbacks. Just getting the books written was a challenge. Finding the right set of supplements that would work best for patients and clients took years and trial and error. Creating an online home-study program took over a year. Even the idea of letting my colleagues know what I was doing was tough. I knew how many patients we were helping but I didn’t want to be looked at as a quack. Once I did come out to everyone regarding the holistic approach everyone was supportive.
Please tell us about your business.
At Dr. Liz Cruz Partners in Digestive Health, we are in the business of partnering with our patients to deliver world-class traditional GI medical evaluations combined with a proven holistic approach that eliminates fear and accelerates life-long health and vitality.
We see patients day in and day out with digestive issues. We work them up from a traditional and holistic standpoint to get to the issue as fast as possible. Then, we offer them an approach to truly get better not just put a band-aid on their symptoms. Even if they only want medicine and don’t want the holistic approach it’s still offered but never forced. We are the only Gastroenterology practice in the valley that offers this approach to digestive issues.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Never giving up, being willing to learn what my medical degree didn’t teach me and being open to that learning. Not being afraid to share it with others even though it’s different then what I was taught. Never giving up, did I mention that already. Ha! There were many times it got hard and we considered giving up, but we didn’t!
