Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise Boysaw.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always been drawn to the arts, design, and museums. I enjoy the thought-provoking aspect of art and various messages they can quietly share. Around the age of 37, I started painting my own art. I am self-taught and I have taken painting workshops from various artists including nationally known, award-winning artists. Over the years, my love for painting has grown; my style for the most part; and stayed true to my first love, abstracts. Now, 10 years later, I continue to grow along with my art.
Please tell us about your art.
I find joy in painting original artwork. My first love is creating abstract paintings. Abstracts take me on a journey. And I never know where I’ll end up. I’m inspired by stories and words. My paintings transport me to places I cannot physically visit. My designs encourage and provoke new thoughts. I create many custom art pieces for people’s homes. There is something very special about owning a custom piece of artwork that was created for your special place.
I am very thankful to have found something that is creative that is connected with a thought process. People may be surprised at how much thought and planning go into a painting, especially an abstract painting. Many times, people think we just pour or splatter paint on a canvas and call it a great day. Ha! To be able to paint for someone is a gift in of itself. Very humbling.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Wow. This is a tough one. Overall as an artist, I define success just by not giving up painting and continuing to paint. Many artists have a fear associated with their art. Since often times, it’s a form of self-expression, any type of rejection or negative comment towards the work can be taken personally. In the beginning, I too experienced this. Learning to separate the critique of the work from the worker is a success by not giving up. For example, when I have titled a piece of work sometimes the client will want to change it. In the beginning, I was a taken aback by that. Now, I really enjoy when people take my work and make it their own. It means I have inspired thought or creativity in someone.
From a more commercial viewpoint, since most of my work is client based, as long as my clients love their custom piece or any piece they’ve purchased, that too is a success. I am grateful for them because they also inspire creativity in me to help achieve their vision in a piece and that helps balance my work.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
