Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Wellz.
Eddie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey got started as a young child who just loved to freestyle and had a great imagination and memory. I personally never saw myself being a musician or artist when I was younger, but friends and family kind of encouraged me to chase my passions and use my natural gifts. When I first went to the studio back in 2010 after graduating high school the year before, I decided then and there that I wanted to pursue music and art with everything I had. Now almost a decade later I am rebranding and reestablishing my solo career as a overall artist, stretching my skill set even further into being author, writer and drawing as I create a new multimedia legend known as Black Cat Bill. This story is a major step into revealing my true vision as artist as I plan on expanding it into a wider universe and using every available form of expression to build it up, such as music, manga style graphic novels and eventually television and video games adaptation.
On the other side of things, I’ve been moving forward with my band Dropout Kings and we also have some new artistic developments that I’m excited to get into as we progress. The sound of this band, in particular, is something we are trying to hone in on and blend different elements of hip hop and metal into a new sound that’s almost unique into itself. All things considered, right now I’m busy as ever creating and it’s great! The only thing left is to execute these early steps and I think people will start to see the bigger picture and the true scope of what’s coming soon here after and beyond.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been anything but smooth lol! That being said, I understand the journey is the main part of the overall process to not just reaching a destination, but becoming a person worthy of doing so. I mean anything you can think of from canceled shows to vehicular break downs and wack videos. Financial issues, collaboration fall throughs, I mean the list goes on and on. In the end, it’s more about perseverance then being super talented and or cool. Everyone who chooses to be an artist in a capitalistic system like this I think is probably gonna have a tough time at some point just pushing forward, but if you want to live it then you have no choice. Gotta rose above.
We’d love to hear more about your music.
As an artist, I’m just trying to connect to as many people as possible and deliver messages I think are important for us all to consider. Not much different from any other artist right? However, I suppose what I’m known for within my artist circles in being a refined writer and an eccentric emcee. I take pride in performing and going all out, making sure I display just as much energy and passion enacting my craft as I have for/while making it. Another thing I think is my grasp on my imagination. I think a lot of people have skills and visions, but they don’t know how to put them together sometimes or don’t relay them to others in a way that they can understand and vibe with easily. I think I’m really good at taking the abstract and making it digestible and likewise making the basics seem more eclectic and exciting.
I love animals, science fiction, history, metaphors, politics, plants, technology, anime and more and all of that comes through in a very special way in my music. I just have a lot of fun being myself and at the end of the day, my art shows that fact so I think it’s fun to engage in for anyone who comes across it one way or another!
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was defiantly that kid that got along with everyone. I moved a lot and up through high school had lived in basically 4 different states (CO, MN, AZ, ID) along with some time in Louisville Kentucky and elsewhere. Not a military baby, but my parents got divorced and both simply moved around for work and so while I was bouncing between both of them I got see and experience a lot of different communities and places that not many at the age do. I settled in AZ in the 2000s for the most part and have called it home ever since. I just obsessed over basketball, football, cartoons, mortal kombat and HipHop, etc. I was very laid back and easy going and I still am to this day. More or less I’d say just your classic 90s baby with a little extra sauce to em ya know? Haha.
