Meet Dwayne Johnson of Sheadiva’s Designs in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dwayne Johnson.

Dwayne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Everything started back in 2010 when I secretly watched the second season of Rupaul’s Drag Race behind my parent’s back. After that, I was enthralled with the entire art and practice of drag. I wanted to design and sport my own fashions, apply makeup, sport a larger than life wig, and PERFORM for people. Looking back at it now… it’s kind of scary how ambitious I was when I started because those passions have carried me through some of my worst moments in life. They have gotten me through College with my associates in fashion design, a fashion internship in Vancouver, and fashion runways as a makeup artist. Now I have even bigger fish to fry just evolving and growing my practice as an all-around artist.

Has it been a smooth road?
This road has been bumpy as hell. I struggled with being bullied and singled out, so I had to get a grip on who I was at a very young age. People love to hate what they don’t understand. And being black and queer hate really can come from anywhere. And even if it isn’t hated. People have a hard time understanding me as a person because they get caught up with what’s on the surface.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My specialty is tea. I know the hottest tea on fashion, trends, makeup, haircare, skincare, and beauty. For others, this stuff is a mundane task but for me its language for which I am fluent in. And my service is shopping. You hate wasting time and money on stuff that doesn’t work for you. You hate wasting product because you don’t know how to use it. I’m your girl. We will shop til we drop and I’ll make sure you know how to use what you are getting.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
My proudest moment has to be when I did makeup at my first runway show in Tempe.
